  • Seton hill announcers said they cant wait for 4 quarters in MBB.. ugh! I think 4Q has killed any kind of flow in WBB and would do same to MBB. Anyone else thoughts?

        • No doubt. In 30 years not sure I've seen a better half -- or a louder building. Special night. The opponent makes it all the better.

I am still not used to quarters in WBB. Good part is that there is one fewer media time out per half and that not shooting free throws till 5 in a quarter reduces the number of foul shots.

Quarters will never happen in MBB until they can figure out a way to do it and have four media time outs per half.

                    Notes:

                    * IUP has three tough games remaining. Gannon and UPJ visit the KCAC. Tomorrow's trip to a fired up Mon Valley will not be an easy one.

                    * UPJ has two tough road trips remaining to Mercyhurst and IUP. Tomorrow's visit to Morrow could be tricky. SRU played them real tough the first time.

                    * Mercyhurst has a tough final run. This week the Lakers travel across town to Gannon, followed by a weekend visit from UPJ. Cal visits in two weeks.

                    * California entertains IUP tomorrow and then should have three straight relatively easy wins. Tough ending, however, with a trip to Mercyhurst and a Gannon visit.

                    * The Rock hasn't clinched a conference tournament birth yet, but likely only needs to win one more game to officially do so. SRU is in a collapse, but should beat either SH or ED.

                    * Seton Hill has some nice freshmen players. The biggest challenge may be keeping them in Greensburg this off-season.

                    * Clarion better win at home tomorrow against Edinboro. After that ... UPJ, Gannon, Cal and IUP. Brutal ending.

                    * Edinboro's season can't end fast enough. The even worse news is Anthony Coleman and Trey Staunch are done after these last 6 games.

                    • Gannon and Cal could wind up playing two times in three days. The Leap Day battle may be for the right to host the Monday postseason affair.

                      • Enjoy tonight. Saturday's lineup is pretty bad.

IUP at California - It's been a long time since California defeated IUP. The Crimson Hawks have won 12 straight in the series and 14 of the past 15 meetings. IUP's last loss in California was on Feb. 8, 2012. IUP won the first meeting, 86-69, in a game that was much closer than the final score indicated. IUP pulled away late. California has been famous this year for fast starts and fading in the second half of big games. IUP has been the opposite. The Crimson Hawks have usually started slow and then go crazy after the break. IUP scored 58 points on Cal in the second half. The Vulcans also blew an 18-point lead in that game and lost by 17 ... an incredible swing. IUP has to avoid that slow start tonight to leave the Angelo Dome with a win. This is certainly an UPSET ALERT game. IUP is just a little deeper. Crimson Hawks leave the Mon Valley with a tough win. IUP -3

Mercyhurst at Gannon - As the venue changes for Round 2, some are expecting -- by Porreco Cup standards -- a shootout tonight in the Hammermill. The winning team could crack 65-70 points. While this is always a big game in Erie, this particular meeting has large stakes at play. The winner will take a big step toward a possible Round 1 home game -- and possibly a bye. The Lakers have had the hot hand as of late over their crosstown rivals, having won the past three meetings. The past 10 meetings, however are an even 5-5 split. Both are red hot. The Lakers have won 4 straight. The Golden Knights have won their past 5 outings. It should be a festive atmosphere tonight in the 'Mill. Gary Manchel, however, is famous for spoiling parties. His defense travels. Lakers win a 'shootout' ... Mercyhurst -3

Kutztown at East Stroudsburg - The Warriors had a 4-game skid in January. Now, they are a 4-game win streak. That sums up life in the East this year. Kutztown is two games under .500 but has won 2 of its past 3 games. However, their past outing they got blown out by Lock Haven. All logic points to the Warriors taking care of business at home tonight. ESU -9

UPJ at Slippery Rock - SRU has lost 3 of 4 -- and has been blown out of the gym in all three losses. On the surface, this appears to have another blowout loss looming for the Rock. However, UPJ has struggled against big, physical teams this year. The Mountain Cats stole the first meeting this year against SRU, winning 72-69. SRU's mental state is probably the biggest factor tonight. Talent-wise, they have the horses to stay in this game. Mentally ... we'll see. SRU is 3-7 in its past 10 games against UPJ. Morrow Field House has been famous for some upsets over the years. Tonight, however, won't be one of them. UPJ -7

Salem at Seton Hill - Salem is a good, average team. Which means, of course, they should win this game. The Griffins have enough in their top 6 guys to keep this close for most of the night, but, as has been the case all year, they will run out of steam in the final 10 minutes. Salem leaves Greensburg with a win ... -8

Shippensburg at Millersville - In the cluttered mess of the East standings, Millersville could still get a bye or a home game in Round 1 of the conference tournament. Or, they could be the No. 6 seed. All options are in play. Things are that tight. The first meeting this year -- a 76-65 Shippensburg win -- wasn't as close as it seemed. The Raiders blew out to a commanding 16-point halftime lead inside Heiges. The Mauraders can be a good team. Some nights they look the part. However, having Shippensburg come to town in the midst of a two-game skid isn't a good remedy. The Raiders should get a tussle tonight, but they are just the more superior team. Millersville stays in it for awhile, but Shippensburg pulls away in the second half. Raiders -9

West Chester at Shepherd - Amazing item: West Chester hasn't defeated a team not named Mansfield since January 11. Shepherd hasn't been much better of late having lost 3 of its past 5 outings. WCU won a pretty tight first meeting. WCU may still have a nice 15-7 record, but make no mistake ... they are on life support. Shepherd is still one game out of the last spot. Take the home team tonight. The way West Chester is playing it's hard to even call it an upset. The Rams of Shepherd get a nice home win. SU Rams -5

Mansfield at Bloomsburg - The winner of this game will still have some hope of making the conference tournament. The loser takes one more slow step toward the banquet. Mansfield won the first time. Because a winner must be selected ... Bloomsburg gets a home win and ends its 4-game skid. Huskies -1

Edinboro at Clarion - This was quite the thrilling game a couple weeks ago. Clarion pulled out a 93-81 win inside McComb. Anthony Coleman didn't play in the first game. He will tonight. That could make the difference. But, it likely will not. Edinboro's defense is just non-existent. The Golden Eagles pull out another shootout and keep their faint tournament hopes alive. Clarion -4

I'm relatively neutral on this, but I think it's kind of silly to argue it would kill the flow, given the number of media and coaches' timeouts in the average game, which at least isn't as bad at our level as at Division I. Not to mention that when you get a physical game or simply bad officiating it can become a constant parade of players to the foul line in the last few minutes. From that aspect, I do like reverting to five fouls per quarter before the free throws start.

I'm very pro 'leave it alone' on this topic regarding the men's game. To use the famous saying ... if it ain't broke ....
