On the IUP Basketball threat I posted something about West Chester being like the proverbial Forrest Gump box of chocolates. You never know what you're going to get from them, and this weekend was ample proof. I would never bet on a Damien Blair West Chester basketball team one way or the other, because it's impossibe to know which version is going to show up.

Herster played some when they were at Ship. Austin didn't appear at all. I was disappointed as I thought that was a very winnable game for Ship with Austin out of the lineup.Originally posted by IUPbigINDIANS View PostMaceo Austin and Ike Herster were both absent today for Slippery Rock.
What's the word on these two? Obviously they aren't replacing that kind of pop in the lineup.

If I can add correctly, the West went 36-12 against the East this year in Men's crossovers.Originally posted by Ship69 View Post
That looks like a very well-balanced division, although Gannon — and perhaps IUP if they put it together — seem to have some separation from the rest. It should be an exciting conference season. Bottom half of the East does not look strong.
Of course, that's irrelevant on Final Four weekend.

It's the opening night of West play.
Men's
Pitt-Johnstown at IUP - You can judge common opponents, etc., ... it doesn't matter. This game is almost always tight. Joe and the Redshirts are on upset alert. IUP -3.5
Slippery Rock at Clarion - The Rock is 11-3 but hasn't exactly played a tough schedule. Not to mention you never know who is actually playing and who isn't. Clarion is 7-7 but has played a brutal schedule. Regardless of who plays or who doesn't, take the home team tonight. The Golden Eagles are tough in Tippin -- and much more battle-tested. SRU has too many unknowns. Clarion -5.5
Seton Hill at California - Game of the night. Both are 6-0 in league play. After a dreadful 1-4 start, the Vulcans got healthy and have won 8 straight. Seton Hill has the roster to contend in the West. Take the road team tonight. It's tough to win in Angelo's Dome but the Griffins are going to cause Cal a lot of matchup problems. It will, however, be close. SH -2.5
Gannon at Edinboro - The Scots recently struggled with a pretty bad Bloomsburg team. That won't bode well tonight. That said, expect a little extra spunk from the Scots in this local rivalry game (which has a history of getting pretty chippy). Edinboro isn't deep enough to run for 40 minutes. Knights drop the hammer in the second half. Gannon -14.5

TONIGHT:
California at Clarion - The Vulcans are sizzling -- winners of 10 straight. Cal isn't deep, but it is finally back at full strength. Danny's tiny rotation just took down Gannon. However, don't overlook this Clarion team. The Golden Eagles sit at 8-8, but have played one of the toughest schedules around (including West Liberty and Daemen). Clarion has a big win at West Chester and most recently won a 2 OT thriller at Seton Hill. They are by no means a pushover. The betting line tonight is California -6.5. This could be one of those times to take the dog at home.
IUP at Slippery Rock - Team Redshirt travels to the Joe Lombardi House of Horror. No venue has caused the long-time head coach more grief (and losses) than Morrow Field House. Making matters worse, SRU's two stars -- Maceo Austin and Ike Herster -- finally returned this past weekend. On paper, IUP has the better, deeper team. But, not by a whole lot. Strange stuff happens in this series -- especially in Slippery Rock. The Rock is very tough at home -- and let's just say gets some breaks. Vegas says SRU is a small favorite. Rock -2.5
Seton Hill at Gannon - A trip to Erie isn't the prescribed remedy to end a 2-game skid. However, since Gannon's revival, the Griffins have probably been their biggest thorn. Seton Hill is 3-3 against the Knights in the past 6 meetings. Head Coach Ben Wilkins seems to have a little kryptonite against the Gannon system. And, in what should be a cut-throat West race, Seton Hill desperately needs to stop the bleeding. The bad news, however, for the visitors is in the past several years Gannon is nearly impossible to beat in Erie. Expect a close one. The Griffins will have an advantage inside and also have pretty strong guards. Gannon -5.5
Pitt-Johnstown at Edinboro - Looking down the road, this is a gigantic game between two likely 'bubble' teams come PSAC Tournament time. UPJ is riding a rare, 4-game losing skid. The Scots have won 4 of their past 5 -- albeit against shaky competition. Tough call. This particular Mountain Cats team is a bit sporadic -- an odd trait for a Bob Rukavina team. But, they are more battle-tested than the Scots -- and they are due. Take the road team tonight -- in a tight one. Pitt-Johnstown -3.5

Makes that Ship win up at Clarion look pretty good, Of course the Raiders then follow it up by somehow figuring out how to lose to Bloomsburg, then play Millersville down to the wire, and tonight win an ugly one against Kutztown tonight. Nothing erratic about Ship this season. LOL.Originally posted by IUPbigINDIANS View PostClarion pulled the upset tonight in Tippin, ending Cal's 10-game winning streak.
The Vulcans played (6) players. Total.

Some might see that as a sign of "weak"ness...Originally posted by Ship69 View Post

Seriously, what do you expect tomorrow??? ESU is playing well against the lesser teams in the East.

Well, nobody is claiming a 7-9 Ship team is a powerhouse. When they've shot at a decent rate, they've shown the ability to hang with most teams, including last-minute losses with Seton Hill and Millersville and an away win over a decent Clarion team (which ended Cal's 10-game winning streak this week). But when they go cold, they all seem to go cold at once, resulting in some ugly stretches of basketball. I have no idea what to expect Saturday. It could be a good game if the Raiders of Tuesday night against Millersville show up. If the Raiders of Thursday night show up, it likely would be East Stroud in a rout.Originally posted by WarriorVoice View Post

IUP basketball question.
I don't usually follow basketball, but I see that IUP has one conference loss. But I can't figure out from who?
I see that they lost to Ashland (not conference) and West Chester (who is in the East), so that shouldn't impact the West standings, right?
Thank you,

The crossover games do count in the conference record.Originally posted by Tdobson View PostIUP basketball question.

Obviously the Catch 22 is some years you draw easy games. Some years you don't.
