It's a bit early for this but it looks like JESS STROM was more than a little peeved at the beatings her team took at the end of last year and some players may not be returning. It could also be that some players have called it quits or moved on for playing time. In any event @CalUofPAWBB announced the signing of their sixth incoming player, KASHMIER SMALLS-HARMON 6'1" F/C of Camden Tech HS and Philly Freedom Elite U-17. That makes four bigs in this class which was definitely a weakness in last year's VULCANS. She had committed to MORGAN STATE early last fall but apparently had a change of heart. How these parts all align with 11 potential returnees is anyone's guess, but someone has done a nice job of selling the program to several outstanding players. Only about 6 months to wait and see how it all shakes out.

Some of us did not mind it at all.

Dang ... 7 is a huge class in basketball. Being a typical roster is 11-12 players .... several of the incoming freshmen are going to see heavy minutes.

I was thinking exactly the same thing especially since there are still 11 returnees from last year. Over her 7 yrs as HC, JESS STROM has had exactly 13 players on her roster on average so simple math says either she wants more depth OR 4-5 players from last year won't be around come fall. And I'd guess that they've been told who they are. Not a happy situation but it looks like she's taking the tough steps to get her team back to it's usual position. Time will tell.

Things keep getting weirder in the Valley. With the 7 school announced signings, this morning a transfer from UDC, DAEJA QUICK, tweeted that she has accepted an offer of a full ride to CALU. No school announcement which leads me to believe that some previous commits may have backed out and JS may have gotten a bit gun-shy about making another possibly premature call. Video looks like another nice player but sooner or later enough is enough.

Never know. Remember scholarships are year to year. Sometimes a player comes along and they don't want to pass them up. That means another scholarship gets pulled to make room. It happens. That's the cold side of the NCAA.

Looks likely that someone's got pulled to make room for QUICK. ALL ECC 3rd team and ROOKIE OF THE YEAR, she played 31 MPG averaged 16.0 PPG and 2.2 SPG on another dreadful UDC team, a year she described as a bad experience. Apparently CALU was her first choice coming out of CORNELL HS in CORAOPOLIS but nothing was available due to the influx of transfers. I cannot wait to see how this shakes out in the fall.

Is it really that easy to dump a scholarship student-athlete? I'm not so sure on that. I would think that binding letter of intent would work both ways to be honest. I do admit that I gave up some time ago trying to make sense of the wonderful world of everything NCAA and how it all works.

                      Re: Calu wbb '18-'19

                      Scholarships are one-year deals.

They are trying to change that and some schools have (USC). But, yes, you can dump players at the end of the year. Joe has 'removed' several over the years although it was probably termed a 'transfer'. Reference the Aussies of a few years back.

Thing is they miss a lot on these guys. Some aren't as advertised. Some are issues, grades, etc. Some just aren't any good once they get here. Cut the losses. It's not talked about a lot but it happens yearly.

One signee for VULCANS WBB who apparently is solidly on board come this fall is SHAUNA HARRISON of Myerscough College Basketball Academy in the north of England. She'll be busy this summer as a member of the Great Britain U20 women's team playing in the FIBA European Championships in Romania. She has a lot of international experience having already played for the GB U16 and U18 teams. Her school team is part of the WEABL (WOMEN'S ELITE ACADEMY BASKETBALL LEAGUE) which is also where LANA DORAN played before joining the VULCANS. SHAUNA is listed as a 5'11" SG though that may not be the position that JS has in mind for her.
In the first game vs ISRAEL, 55-72 loss, SH had a bad shooting day, 1-6, but led GB with 10 rbs and 2 stls. Definitely a JESS STROM sort of player. Contribute however you can. Next up ROMANIA on Sunday.

Word has it that Graduate student and 2-time All-MEC Player Monica Burns who was at Wheeling Jesuit the last two years will suit up for Cal this season as she has one year of eligibility left. This will add one of the premiere 3-point shooters to that team as well!

They'll have to order more chairs then because she would be # 19 if my count of returnees, incoming 1st year and incoming transfers is correct. Unless they're going to RS 5-7 players. Can't wait to see the posted roster.
