  • He's only 17, too. Most high school athletes have a great improvement from 17 to 18 -- physically, mentally, etc. And, as you said, at the college level he'll be a spike in the wheel -- not the whole wheel. He won't be getting the hack-a-shaq treatment and constant double-teams, etc. Recruiting is a tricky business. How does he project in two years -- talent, body, etc. Pitt seems to want him pretty bad. I have to trust Capel obviously knows what he wants and sees a lot in him. The Blue Bloods aren't going to come calling for him but that next wave is very interested.

I wouldn't say Morris flopped out at Tennessee State. He went through a coaching change. It's common players leave during this process (full discclosure, Morris and 6 of his teammates all left at the same time). He also said he wanted to closer to home. And, his new team may have beat his old team. Just sayin' Whatever the reason ... we're sure real glad he's here. David is going to be a star at IUP starting next year. His role this year -- so far, anyway, is to be a distributing point guard. I'm guessing next season he moves back to his natural position for his final two seasons IUP.

    • There is a lot of talk that Jeffress will pursue graduating a year early and enter college next fall. That is the right decision if you feel you are going to the NBA (an extra money earning year), but a questionable decision if your ceiling is college ball.

        • Were you at the game? From what I read Jeffress scored 26 as McDowell took down visiting Pine-Richland in what was likely labeled his final home game as you allude to. How did he look?

In Pitt news----the Panthers defeated Georgia Tech this afternoon at the Pete. Slam Penny was the star of the show as he scored 30 points and grabbed 9 boards. Put the lad's name on the All-Freshman team. Pitt advances their record to 15-9 overall and 6-7 in the conference. They are back in action on Wednesday night at 9PM as they welcome Clemson to the Pete.

Pitt had to go the final several minutes without both bigs Terrell Brown and Eric Hamilton as they both fouled out. Jeff Capel was assessed a technical foul for tossing a towel on Brown's final foul. Freshman Karim Coulibaly had to come into the game for the first time to man the low post for the duration. He got the job done.

          In some other news---

-The victory was Pitt's fourth straight conference win at home which is the first time that they have accomplished that in five years (2015).

-Pitt recruit PF/C Big John Hugley scored 52 points last evening for Brush High out in Cleveland and set a new school record in the process. He's really going to help out the Panthers next season. The Beast is hungry and he is coming to Oakland this summer!

-Trey McGowens' brother Bryce, a four-star SG recruit has just committed to Florida State.

-Yet another display of Slam Penny's Brooklyn tough game should be even more motivation for the Pitt staff to try and close the deal with PG Femi Odukale who will be visiting campus in less than two weeks. Odukale is from.....you guessed it---Brooklyn. He grew up a huge fan of Big East basketball.

Ah! This is the absolute key phrase in all of this. When watching tape of prospects that is THE most important thing to look at. It's not just ooing and awing and saying wow nice catch, nice shot, nice throw, nice tackle. It is all about the projection of the athlete in question and how he fits at the next level of the game whether it be college sports or the NFL. I watch a lot of tape of college football prospects for the NFL Draft every spring and have gotten into trying to figure out which high school hoops players have game enough to be an asset at the college level. There are a lot of factors to take into account (speed, quickness, athleticism, size, game IQ, intuitive instincts, character, background issues, etc) But it all comes down to projection!

And it's not an easy thing to figure out sometimes.

SPLAT! Pitt played their absolutely worst game of the season last night and subsequently lost to Clemson by 20. It was an awful performance to say the least. X-man and Trey combined for a 2-20 shooting night from the floor. You will not win many games with that. Horrible outing and not a very fun way for Jeff Capel to celebrate his 45th birthday.

The schedule gets tougher from here out. Pitt is going to have to play at their best here to be in some of these games. It is going to be tough sledding for sure. Pitt falls to 15-10 for the season.

Rather conversely, Penn State is 19-5 and looks to be heading for an NCCA tourney berth.

Some news on the recruitment on William Jeffress----while a strong number of the crystal baller crowd have him going to Pitt it seems that he will take a visit to Michigan as well as some of the higher academic institutions around. So stay tuned.

The Pitt staff is said to be going all out in a recruiting blitz for combo guard Femi Odukale. He is putting up some incredible numbers against elite competition. He is due to make a visit to Pitt here next week as was mentioned earlier. He is someone Pitt could really use.

                • Pitt has a good opportunity at redemption tomorrow at Virginia Tech. This is a very winnable game for the Panthers. Va-Tech is in the midst of a five game losing streak. Jeff Capel needs to have Au'Diese Toney climb inside the jersey of the Hokies best offensive threat Landers Nolley II who averages 17 a game and stick with him all night long. Capel then has to instruct his guards to play out on the perimeter and meet the Hokie backcourt there and defend the three-point line. From what I see that is about the only way they can hurt you. Take that away and you should get the W.

Tip is set for 6 PM and the game can be seen on ACC Network.

You'll be getting ready to watch Joe play Gannon tomorrow night.

No. But it sounds like Gannon gals have rebounded well with the return of Cleve Wright. Great coach there!

There will be absolutely no excuse for Pitt to lose this game tomorrow night if the Capel and the staff go about their business the right way.

                      Famous last words.

I applaud your optimism, but Pitt is 2-30 in their last 32 ACC road games and are 1-5 all time in Blacksburg. I hope you are right but Pitt is going to need some incredible breaks to pull this off.

I don't disagree with your concerns as they are certainly backed up by the data that you have presented. I have taken a look at the analytics of this contest and I really think that Pitt can win this if they would only not do a lot of incredibly stupid things (see Clemson game). I will hope for the best.

Did anyone catch the Jeff Capel Show today? They had Julius Page and a member of the mid-1970s teams (name I can't recall). I was shocked when he said how they would sometimes practice for six or seven hours a day back then before the 20-hour rule came into play. That's just nuts.

                            • Okay, let's get caught up on some Pitt happenings. Has there been any news out of Oakland of recent? Ah, yes, Pitt football and men's hoops now finds themselves on probation for several NCAA infractions that they self-reported to the governing body of college athletics. While you certainly never want to hear that your favorite team is on probation----the good news here is that the penalties are VERY minor. Neither team will see their scholarships reduced nor will they be subject to any sort of postseason banishment. In a nutshell the violations were simple things such as quality control folks throwing a football or holding up play cards during football practice or having them doing some coaching type duties such as player instruction during the previous basketball coaching regime. Minor but infractions nonetheless if one is to adhere to the telephone book thick code of the NCAA.

Many feel that this stuff was borne of the Kevin Stullings clash with the university and their attempts to hammer out an agreement on a settlement during his firing two springs ago. Stullings is now on a three-year just cause clause that stipulates that if he is to take a coaching job in that time frame he will be on suspension for 30% of his schools games the first season. The biggest penalty that a Pitt coach will incur is that Pat Narduzzi must sit out two days of practice either this spring or in fall camp. Dan Cage who was the director of basketball operations under Stullings has also been hit with the just cause thing. Some feel that he may have been the one to stir the pot here as I believe that his name is mentioned in the report.

Probably the absolute craziest thing to think about in all of this was that Stullings cheated a bit and STILL went 0-19 in ACC play two years ago. Like one Pitt fan stated----even his cheating sucked! There is no word around town if Pitt will be forced to formally vacate that 0-19 season. Goodness!

In some news on the court---the Panthers have been getting the worst of it of late. They played well in the early portion the other night at Florida State before the Seminoles employed a very deep bench on the overwhelmed Panthers. Pitt deserves a lot of credit for the job that they have done this season but it is now becoming evident that they have hit a wall and are a worn down unit that does not have the reserves and depth needed to contend this deep into the ACC schedule. That should change next year with four new players coming in and two more still likely to sign.

Femi Odukale who of course is the flashy combo guard who is on the rise in the recruiting world has already began his official visit to Pitt for the weekend. He was recently voted as the top prep player in Massachusetts and has gained offers from Virginia Tech as well as several PAC-12 and Big East schools. Hopefully his visit will go well.

Pitt will be back in action tomorrow at noon at the Pete against Virginia.

It would be hard for them to crack down too much on Pitt after totally letting North Cheatolina get away with rampant academic fraud.
