  • Former Topper Devin Hoehn named Bluefield State Head Coach

Our coaching pipeline is really good https://twitter.com/nsdugan/status/1...794352640?s=21

That's a tough place to build something, though. Life as an Independent is a rough road. Best of luck to Devin. If anyone can build something there, maybe he can.

Wow...Good get for Bluefield! If you remember WLU teams of old, you can be very successful with lesser athletes which is probably the kind that Bluefield will get.

I get the feeling that Bluefield is really angling to get into the MEC. Capehart seems to be making all the right moves to get Bluefield back on stable ground. When/if that happens, I would imagine that their next move will be to seek MEC membership.

The SE WV/SW VA/E Kentucky area is very rural...much like the areas of Ohio were Crutch found the undersized/gym rat/coaches son/100% effort type players that exclusively populated the WLU teams for the first five or six years of his tenure. Perfect area to try and recreate and impliment the WLU system.

I'll be watching next season with great interest. The WLU system, when put in 100% from day one produces rapid radical changes. WLU went from 4-23 to 21-10 the first year and NovaSE went from 6-20 to 17-10. It will beinteresting to see if Hoehn can do the same his first year at Bluefield.

Two players Hoehn needs to call ASAP...Haselbaker and Conley. It would help the process having a couple of players who have played in the system before!

Just saw that Bluefield State changed their nick name from just The Blue to Blue Danes. Blue Great Danes are some pretty dogs!!

BSC has less than 1000 full time students. Looks like a last ditch effort to increase enrollment by getting a foothold in an area with more potential students. This move probably killed any dreams of getting into MEC.

If Hoehn gets them rolling ... trouble he'll have is finding anybody to play. Being an independent is hard to begin with ... being one that scores a ton of points and presses for 40 minutes will make scheduling about impossible. LOL.

Urbana pursued the same growth model and it worked for awhile before closing a couple of years ago. bsc is also trying to open a branch in wheeling to poach students there so they are exhausting all avenues short of a merger with concord.

other than football, most of the other sports are low overhead. But football gets donors fired up.

problem they face is population decline in southern wv coal fields but number of colleges have remained the same- concord, bsc, bluefield college just across the va line, swva community college, wvu tech in beckley 40 mikes away, etc.

as a HSBCU, bsc now is only 17% African American. Would that be a barrier to CIAA?
