Comfortable non strenuous win over a not terrible LHU WBB team 79-56. Even scoring with BURNS 13, JASPER, HARRISON and HUDSON all with 10. HARRISON and BURNS with 6 RB each. Team stats that made the difference were 15-15 FT and 27-6 margin in points off TO.
Should be similar against MANSFIELD tomorrow.

Basically a scrimmage for CAL U 70. MANS. 42. JS decided to all out press a team with high average TO of 20.... so today the MOUNTAINEERS turned it over 36 times leading to VULCANS 36 POTO. Even though the PF were even at 15 CAL U shot 12-16 FT against MU 2-3. Everyone played led by HUDSON 11, BENNETT, HARRISON 10, BURNS 9. HALLE HERRINGTON got a lot of time at PG and looks to be BIANCA JASPER'S backup. SHAUNA HARRISON'S left wrist was wrapped from fall but it didn't seem to matter. Second straight day 3pt shooting was way off at 6-25.
A couple of additional thoughts. VULCAN WBB has played 7 games which is 25% of their schedule and it's not yet December. December is very light schedule, 4 games, to accommodate finals and start of winter break. Just finishing up the OOC/X-OVER before commencing PSAC WEST against UPJ, @SRU, SHEP in January.
Watching the replay of Sunday's game versus MANSFIELD I noticed that the crazy aggressive defense was used for the first time. I'm guessing that the fact that MU was averaging 20 TO per game was the reason. It certainly worked in the first half with 21 TO off 12 steals and in the second with 15 TO off only 3 steals. Against a clearly overmatched opponent it is almost unfair. Add to that the willingness of CAL U players to take charges and the big difference in shots taken, 70-49, is clearly important.

I sort of knew this game was coming but didn't expect it here. Three major problems were exposed. #1 live by the three, die by the three. 8-27 isn't awful but misses in the fourth qtr will doom you, especially when you're out rebounded 36-47. #2 17 TO versus 12.6 average is a big problem. #3 JS is trying to force D1 transfer CITIANA NEGATU into a major role and it's not working. In her 15 minutes she had 2 pts, 2 rb, 1 to AND FOULED OUT !!! OLIVIA HUDSON had 14 minutes with 7 pts, 5 rbs, 2 to, 1 blk, 1 stl and also fouled out but was a somewhat more effective player.
This game reminds me of a loss at home to FINDLAY by the 14-15 team that I don't understand to this day.
WVSU, @WCU, @MILL rounds out the '19 section of the schedule hopefully with no more surprises.

#4. Ship had the best player on the floor.

Not a concern when evaluating your own team. You don't beat HOUSTON by worrying about HARDEN. If you play your game and control the other players, most often one player won't beat you. When VULCANS WBB beat VUU earlier this year SHAREKA MCNEIL got her 32 but it wasn't enough. Regularly playing in playoffs and championships means a team will encounter outstanding players. If everyone does their job it shouldn't matter.

Very few people can evaluate their own team without taking the opponent into account. And I assure you, yesterday was more a matter of Shippensburg coming of age than Cal underperforming.

24 from JONES which is +2 over #1 scorer average didn't beat the VULCANS. 47 from GREEN, JEFFERSON and MILLS which is +16 over average for #2,3,4 scorers did the trick. SHIP will come of age in March when they show up in the ANGELO DOME or K'COMPLEX and do some damage.

Noted. But that's WHY this was a coming-of-age game for Ship. Every other turning-point game the last 2 1/2 years, Jones has been the only one to step up. Yesterday was the first time they got those kind of performances from the supporting cast.

They'll probably have some more up and down moments. Still a young team with no seniors and eight frosh and sophomores on the roster.

No doubt. What is worrisome about that is that Trn recently had a good freshman class and lost most of them before their sophomore year. Hope that doesn't happen again.

Well, seems to have a lot of sophs this year, so maybe that is a good sign.

Thoughts from last night's 79-58 win over WVSU WBB. The inconsistency of this team cannot be more clearly shown than a 27 pt 1st qtr followed by an 8 pt 2nd qtr. No player on this team can regularly shoot lay-ups. 19 TO is an embarrassment. MONICA BURNS has hit a major cold spell. In her first four games she averaged 22 ppg followed by just 12 ppg in her next 5 games. I can't say why but at the same time MB minutes have dropped from 37 per game to 25. Once again 3 pt shooting for the VULCANS was a sorry 5-20. Only significant plus was 53-33 edge in RB. This game will not do against a WCU team that seems better than it's 3-5 record would indicate.

Two good things to take away from game versus WCU. A WIN which happens to be JESS STROM'S 200th (200-53). Stat wise awful shooting, 36.9%, 3s 22.7%, and RB 31-38. Game was won at the line 14-17 against RAMS 4-7. Also as expected TO 12 vs 22 resulting in 23 POTO. Hoping for a better effort against MILLERSVILLE today though these games are usually pretty close. VULCANS haven't lost at PUCILLO GYM in their last 5 visits (jinx) and the average score there has been 67-57. Could be tough.
Both JASPER and HARRISON played 40 minutes last night with SHAUNA having her WORST NIGHT in memory. With stats of 1-9 FG, 0-6 3s, 5 RB and 4 TO, she can only do better tonight....
