He has one more year of eligibility after 4 years at Bloom. Maybe he will hit the portal again. He would be a very good, if he could shoot free throws. He is about 50% from the line.

Not with that Jack wagon! He seems to think his ESU teams are invincible!

Yeah, he was throwing in everything he shot Wednesday night, including a couple of three-pointers, and then shot a free throw near the end of the game that barely drew iron. Weird how some players get a block about FTs. Sleva has really picked up his free-throw shooting this season. He shot only about 55 percent last season, but has up to about 75 percent this year.

It's not outright saying it. It's the way you present your conversation about them. ESU losing to Shep and the excuses were out in full force. Shep would've beat the Knicks that night blah blah blah... just shut up!

I think at one point ESU made six straight three-pointers in the second half by several different players. The Bloomsburg broadcasters last night said they'd asked Wilson about the Ship game, and he replied, "We hit everything we put up, and they didn't hit anything." That pretty well summed it up. When you run a press as Stroudsburg does, you can overwhelm opponents on a given night, but you also run the risk of leaving the other team open looks if they get through the press. With the three-point shot these days, that can be deadly if you catch a team on a hot night.
Shepherd was kind of famous for similar games back in its MEC days. Their records would typically always hover around .500 (despite a lot of talent) but they'd pull a big upset seemingly every year.

This years' Rams seem to follow the old pattern. That's the same team that was destroyed in Erie a week ago, and survived to beat Clarion, 54-52. .The Rams also struggled (but defeated) both wiinless teams (Bloomsburg and Gannon).

No doubt that's a good starting five. That's a better team than 9-7.

It seems to be a year in the PSAC when a lot of teams are "better than their record." A lot just depends on how you match up. I know Coach Fite was worried about the Mansfield game because he thought they had some strength in areas where Ship hasn't been strong. Mansfield, Gannon, and Bloomsburg actually were tougher games for Ship to this point than Slippery Rock and West Chester, who are well ahead of those three in the PSAC standings. Kutztown, whom we play Saturday, is likely going to be a tougher matchup than its 5-10 overall record suggets.

Ship has been erratic and as the season goes on these games can get more difficult to play. You're in winless Bloomburg's gym with about 150 in attendance — hard to get inspired. Plus, the pressure can mount if they hang with you late in the game as you obviously don't want to give an 0-13 team its first win of the season. Ship has some ugly losses this year, but none of them have come to bad teams. ESU looks to be the class of the East, but is tied with Ship in the standings because the Warriors dropped a couple they probably should win. Ship, of course, is right up the road from Shepherd and never takes them for granted. That will be a tough game next Wednesday and likely could go either way. The bottom does seem to have dropped out on the Shepherd women's team with the departure of Abby Beeman and some of her supporting cast. Shepherd actually had some excellent teams in the '70s and '80s under Coach Bob Starkey. His early '70s teams featured 2,000-point scorers Dave Russell and Rodney Sewall, and his '75-'76 team went 33-3. Funny thing is that Shepherd basketball had kind of descended back to mediocrity as its football program has gotten better.

There are probably only a couple of teams in the PSAC this season — IUP, East Stroud and Mercyhurst most nights — who have the talent to simply overwhelm bad teams even when they're not at their best. The rest run the risk of losing to almost any team on a given night if they don't play well.

                    • Dave Russell was one of the most amazing amateur basketball players I ever saw. 6-8, he would be considered a swingman today. I saw him hit 21-for-22 from the field in a "pickup" tournament game in Chambersburg after his graduation. So smooth. A lot of the shots were 25-footers from the deep baseline, liners that never touched iron. It was the type of performance against high-level competition that you never forget.

He went on to play professionally in Europe, but tragically died at age 24 when he ran his car into a ditch in France.

There is a reason a lot of us on this board take shots at you. You’re definitely to slow to figure out why!
