The ROCK played a very good game but couldn't overcome one of the VULCANS best shooting days...FG-53%, 3PT-50% and FT-76%. SRU fouled a bit more than they should have and so MADE FT were the exact point difference with CAL hitting 19-25 versus 10-17 for SRU. Alston had another solid day with 26 PTS, 15 RBDS and 3 BLKS before fouling out with :45 to go. Collins with 20, Pegram with 14 and Boswell 11 filled out the scoring.
    Final VULCANS 92 ROCK 83.

Another major stepping stone back to PSAC relevance tonight for VULCANS MBB versus UPJ at the ANGELO DOME. Their last 4 games (+4 SHU, +2 IUP, -29 @MC, +2 GU) seems to indicate the CATS aren't dominating as they were earlier and may be vulnerable to CAL's speed and athleticism. Since their home loss to IUP, Phil Alston and company have played solid balanced basketball and need to win this toss-up game to continue the climb back to their former seat of dominance in the conference.

An obvious fail this evening versus UPJ but temporary tech difficulties prevent me from commenting further right now. More to follow.

A big step back in a game in which the VULCANS did a great deal right except shooting. 38.8% FG and 28.3% 3PT will not win at the top level of competition. A big advantage in rebounds 47-34 could not overcome horrible performances by seniors Pegram (3-17-FG/0-6-3PT) and Boswell (1-7-FG/1-4-3PT). The remaining 9 games can't go worse than 7-2 if this team has any hope of reaching the regionals.

Couple observations from watching this game (just from a Cal viewpoint as this is their thread):

            * The ending. Good Lord. So much happened in the final 60 seconds.

            * The last shot never got off. It got blocked. More on that in a bit.

            - But, the story, is the shot before that. This was the key moment -- and call -- for both teams. Pegram had the ball and crossed mid-court with 2.1 seconds left. He was clearly in the act of shooting, and got, basically, hugged by Fred Mulbah as he was near release. Sancomb exploded when the foul was called on the floor (as did the whole building). Keep in mind, Cal was down just 1 point. This should have given Pegram (3) shots as he was clearly in the act of shooting. Granted, the night Pegram was having, no guarantee he'd have made 2 of the 3 FTs to win it, but, he'd have made at least one of them to go to OT. That was a highly controversial call. The theory by UPJ was good because they had fouls to give. But, Mulbah got there late.

            * This led to a timeout. Cal got to draw up one play. They inbounded cleanly but Pegram had his three-point attempt blocked. Game over.

            - Interesting call. Pegram was ice cold all night (3-17 FG and 0-6 deep). But, he is the best shot creator of Cal's guards. It would have been too risky and too long of a pass to try and get down deeper. Was the block actually a foul?

            * Cal was up 10 points with 60 seconds left in the first half and let UPJ cut it in half before the break. They did the same thing in the eventual loss to IUP, letting an 18 point first-half lead slip to 9 right before the break. They likely win both of those losses if they just close out the half.

            * Vulcans smashed the glass, 47-34, had 9 steals and 7 blocks ... and still lost. That's incredible.

            * Danny played an extremely small rotation (6 guys). Consider: Four of the six guys played 40, 40, 39 and 37 minutes. What role did fatigue play in the final 10 minutes?

            * That was a light count at the gate. From the video, there was way more than 368 people in there.

            * Cal is far from out of the West race, but last night made it a lot more difficult. Two games back, yes, but they get both IUP and UPJ again. Both on the road, but the KCAC will have no fans, so that's basically like a neutral court game. There's also another game with Mercyhurst. Round 2 won't be as easy in that one.

All true and the VULCANS are up against it with nine games to go. SRU is probably headed into a 3 game slump with IUP, @IUP and UPJ coming up. Similarly for GU with UPJ, @HURST and IUP. CAL still has @UPJ and @IUP but some softies in between. Hopefully by the time they wrap things up
with 'HURST and @GU things will be clearer.

This "easy" game turned out to be not so much, but VULCANS MBB survives @SHEP 64-61. Hot shooting RAMS gave CAL all they could handle on a below par shooting night. Balanced scoring, Pegram 18, Alston 15, Palek 11 and Collins 10 covered Daggett 21 and Stephens 14 for the home team.
Could be they were thinking too much about the ultra important game @ an empty KCAC tomorrow evening. Who's in charge of hassling Pegram without the hometown faithful in attendance ??

Well, an empty KCAC will be very similar to the XMAS break game at the Angelo Dome. That was played in front of an 'announced' 111 people. It was the only game I've ever attended that had no noise. So, this is essentially Round 2 in a similar empty gym.

Sadly the earlier game was more or less normal, but a silent KCAC versus an historic rival will be very eerie. I can hear the squeaking sneakers in my mind.

                    • This "easy" game versus BORO turned out to be just that as the VULCANS rolled the SCOTS ( not FIGHTIN' today) 88-62. Probably would have been the first +100 since November if DS hadn't emptied his bench late in the game. A season high 13-3pts and a 62-35 edge in rebounds put this game away early.
Monday night's game @UPJ will pretty much define the season as a major stride back or just a baby step. If Sancomb is able to coach this team into a credible late season run and some success in the PSAC and ATLANTIC tourneys, he may be able to hold on to some of the emerging talent, something that has definitely not happened in his early years at CAL U. Continuing with a core of Alston, Collins, Palek, Lucas and the return of Jerome Hall would be a major step in the right direction. Time will tell.

Don't know what happens from here on out but I would think most every team that draws CAL U knows that they will have a tough game on their hands. Tonight's 83-63 W at UPJ was another big step back to the top dog status that VULCANS MBB used to battle for. Beautifully balanced scoring...Pegram 32, Boswell 16, Collins 12, Alston 11 and Palek 10... along with on fire 3Pt shooting 14/28 made a game look easy against a team that doesn't lose at home very often.
Next up @ 3-20 SHU, vs 9-15 CLARION and vs 13-10 SRU. Thanks to an amazing team and Coach Sancomb for beginning the climb back to the top for VULCANS MBB !!!

                        • CALU FLOORS UPJ MT. CATS! Led the entire game to an impressive 83-63 WIN!

                          • As expected not a big challenge, VULCANS MBB-90 G'EAGLES-60. Alston led all starters in double figures with 23 followed by Collins 14, Pegram/Palek 11 and Boswell 10. Team stats solid, with a bit of a drop in garbage time. FG-47.9%, 3PT-29.2% and FT-93.8%. CLARION as might be expected looked like they were playing out the schedule. Can't say I blame them. CAL was there not so long ago.

                            • Live by the 3, die by the 3. SRU goes 10-26 to CAL 7-37 and the VULCANS lose at home 81-87. Another fine night by Alston (24 Pts, 14Rbds) is wasted because the shooters can't hit their shots, Pegram, Collins, Boswell and Palek combine for 5-31. Now Wednesday night versus 'HURST is a CAN'T LOSE if this team has a hope of more than a perfunctory appearance in the PSAC tourney as the period on the season. With the way they've played recently this is especially disappointing. Odd feeling to be both happy that they've had a good season and sad because it could have been more. Time will tell.

                              • VULCANS surprisingly take the season series as they fight to hold on against a hot shooting (13-36 3pt) LAKERS team. In the end extra successful trips to the line (20-29 vs 11-18) made the difference. Phil Alston submits another vote for POY with 38pts and10 rbds. Pegram with 21and Palek with 13 backed him up.
Looking forward it is absolutely critical that DS reverses the trend and hangs on to Alston, Palek and Collins as a young experienced foundation for next year's team. Any repeat of the exodus from the past two teams will be beyond frustrating.
Additional fact this is the first 20 win season since '07-'08 when Bill Brown took CAL to the Elite Eight.
