  • (not really) Free Throws

One thing has blatantly stood out 5-7 games in to the new season. Free throw shooting, well, hasn't been very good.

Two marquee games last night (Daemen at WL and Virginia Union at Millersville) ... Yikes. The WL game came down to the last shot. The Millersville game went to Double OT.

    Daemen - 4 for 9
    WL - 9 for 19

    Millersville - 30 for 45
    Virginia Union - 6 for 12

Small sample, but it's been so bad this year in games I've watched that I actually wanted to look up numbers.

    PSAC

    - 4 of 18 teams at or above 75% FTs
    - 8 of 18 teams at or below 69%
    - 5 of 18 teams at or below 65%
    - Bloomsburg (59%) and Clarion (57%) at the bottom
    - Side note: Millersville has gone 111 for 169 (65.7%). The next closest in attempts is UPJ at 115.

    MEC

    - 4 of 12 teams above 75%
    - 5 of 12 teams below 68%
    - 3 of 12 teams at or below 63%
    - Headlined by Glennville State at an amazing 42 of 80 (52.5%)

    CIAA

    - 2 of 12 teams above 75%
    - 6 of 12 teams below 70%

Great stuff, IUPbig. And what's even more puzzling is this: FT shooting should be the ONE skill that wasn't impacted by the pandemic. You don't need to be in "game speed" to make a free throw. You could see something like defense, passing, or even three-point shooting (with a hand in the face) being impacted by a lack of game-speed action last year. But FT shooting should have been the one skill that was immune to a pandemic-tinged dip. And yet it has been awful across the board (as your data bears out). Strange.

Particularly for outside shooters, you would think shooting a FT would be close to automatic, but often, it is anything but. Id imagine teams will revert to the norm as rhe season goes, but up to now, there are some putrid FT shooting teams and individual performances.

A couple weeks have passed since the first report on the awful FT shooting we've seen this year.

Watching Millersville hit an abysmal 17 of 30 against IUP the other night gave me the idea to see how the Region numbers are looking. Not much better.

          PSAC

10 of 18 teams are still below 70%
4 of 18 teams are at or above 75%

Worst: Clarion (58%) and Bloomsburg (57%)

          MEC

          6 of 12 at or above 70%
          6 of 12 at or below 69%

          Worst: Concord and GSU (63%)

          CIAA

4 of 12 teams at or above 70%
8 of 12 teams at or below 69%

          Worst: Shaw (56%)

A lot of close games were determined based on terrible free throw shooting.

And it's really a bad look when your top two scorers are dragging down the total. VULCANS Alston ( 21.5ppg/ 19-33 ft .576%) and Pegram ( 19.4ppg/ 34-54 ft, .630%) weigh down the team's overall to .687%. Minus the top two the numbers are a respectable 72-95, .758. Guess we know whose getting fouled in a close game.

Pegram hits every crazy trey and struggles with FTs. That is so odd.
