What’s going on with the Lady Vulcans? Have they EVER lost to Lock Haven and Mansfield in the same year? ZERO the-pointers at Mansfield! What happened to the hot shooter Bermudez? Plays very little now after being a starter early in the season. Have there been injuries that I’m not aware of? Some odd losses for a Jess Strom team.

They still don't have any consistent scorers and live/die off defensive pressure. Early season games against usually weaker opponents are misleading. I'm expecting a 20-8 or 19-9 season, two rounds in the PSAC followed by a single game in the D2 regionals.
On the positive side 13 of 15 on the roster are underclassmen and Nina Shaw is playing a crazy 36+ minutes a games as a FRESHMAN POINT GUARD. JS is betting everything on her progress in the next three years.
And for the first time in FOREVER the loyal few who hang around for the second game in the ANGELO DOME, stand an excellent chance of watching some seriously impressive ball !! 70% shooting versus GU is AWESOME😁🏀🔥

Pretty much the opposite of recent games last night at the ANGELO DOME VULCANS WBB played up to the challenge of #15 Fairmont State pulling out a tough 72-68 win. Down by 16 at the half the team fell back on their tried and true shut down defense and enough 3pt shooting to pull out a game which could be a foreshadowing of post season play. Next major challenge is surprising LHU on Tuesday 12/19 before Christmas break.

Absolutely AWFUL game that VULCANS WBB count as a W 58-37. Playing down to your opponent is hard to watch.

In the second game of the opening PSAC/MEC get-together, the VULCANS offense cooled down but the D was solid as usual turning over the G'EAGLES 25 times including 15 steals.
Good stat from these two games was they held high quality MEC programs to a -23 points versus their scoring average from the '22-'23 season,

In an unusual early season match-up between top teams in the PSAC and MEC, Jess Strom's aggressive D and very uncharacteristic (in recent years) effective O, VULCANS WBB took down #16 WVSU 84-68. The shooting stats told the entire story as CAL out shot the visitors in FG by 47.9% to 31.9% and in 3s by 42.1% to 25.9%. Both teams were awful from the FT line hitting around 50%. Otherwise Rbds, TOs and steals were similar.
On Sunday the second half of the Mon Valley portion of PSAC/MEC concludes with the VULCANS versus preseason #2 CHARLESTON

Purely a personal observation but WBB seems much more stable certainly at the D2 level. Players commit early, frequently stay close to home and top players rarely transfer. Definitely nothing close to MBB which is chaotic come Feb-Mar.

I once had a discussion with a local women's D-2 basketball coach on how he ended up with a player who had an offer from Princeton. This coach told me that the girls tend to look at what majors are available at an institution and that becomes the focus of the recruiting process. And that was the case with that particular woman recruit. Whereas male recruits will delay any commitment hoping and looking for the D-1 scholarship offer and will be happy to play the waiting game. Hence, many early signees for women, but not so much on the men's side.

They all play dress-up on recruiting visits these days.

As expected A LOT of changes which will only begin to become clear beginning on Sunday 10/22 in an exhibition vs the TERPS of Maryland...

Upon further review three likely starters are Allycia Harris (Jr-5'9") 30.6 MPG, Jordan Smith (Sr-5'8") 36.8 MPG, and importantly if her legs hold up, Dejah Terrell (R/Sr-6'1") 37.5 MPG. Beyond that time will tell.

Looks like a rebuilding year for Coach Jess. Six incoming players to mix with apparently three returnees who contributed 106.6 MPG last season so a good amount of time is available. No roster has been posted yet but it should drop this week. Time will tell.
