MEC Media Day for basketball is tomorrow, so I was just perusing the rosters to see what things look like around the league. Here are a few things that caught my eye:
1. There are two new coaches in the league. As we know, Justin Caldwell followed Kim Stephens from Glenville to Marshall, so Glenville hired longtime Mountain State U coach Bob Bolen. Frostburg also has a new head man.
2. Speaking of coaching staffs, longtime Atlantic Region sparkplug Preston Boswell has landed on D&E's staff as an assistant to Daniel Mondragen. Don't sleep on Mondragen is trying to build down there.
3. Osborne reloaded at UC. Seemingly all of the most sought-after in-league transfers all collected down in Charleston. He has added dyanmo Freddie Word from Glenville, Dwaine Jones from WVSU, & Deairius Barker from NDC. Put those together with his Marshall transfer from last year and longtime UC'ers Tyler Eberhart & Shunta Wilson, and that becomes a very formidable group if they can jell together quickly enough.
4. Neither Wheeling nor WVSU has posted an updated roster, so it's hard to tell what's happening in those programs. But Anthony Pittman was still just listed as a Junior last year, so I suspect he'll be back to terrorize the league once more time (hasn't that guy been at WVSU since, like, 1997?).
5. May at Concord seems to have recruited almost entirely in-state WV kids to go with a few key transfers. That's an odd strategy given that WV isn't exactly thought of as a basketball hotbed. But I expect May to put out a good product regardless of where they come from--he's a quality head coach.
6. Fairmont brings back Dobbs, Younkin, & Mangas, so expect them to be tough as always. I think Isaiah Sanders has finally moved on. Glad to be done trying to guard that guy.
7. NDC only lists 9 guys on the roster. Tough to go through the grind of a season with that short a bench. Maybe they could borrow a few of Wheeling's guys from their roster that's usually 27 dudes deep.
8. Frostburg appears to be going the transfer route this year--not surprising given that a new head man might want to find his kind of player in the portal to remake the roster quickly. But we won't really know what that new coach is planning to do or how good his transfer group is until they hit the floor.
