Over the years, Dwaine Osborne always seemed a bit like a defense-first coach (with big, physical rosters and a slower pace), but due to WLU's run during his tenure here, Dwaine had to sorta become a modified defense-first coach. I imagine Osborne would have been a guy who would have been happy playing games in the 60-point range if he were in the PSAC. But he had to settle for winning games in high 70s/low 80s in the MEC (which is slow for the MEC). In other words, if Lymas is willing to "go with the flow" just a bit, I suspect Osborne gives you an idea of what it looks like to be a defense-first guy in the MEC--and with quite a bit of success, I might add.

I thought Osborne's team played good defense (until fatigue from wlu's pressure occurred).
florida a&m allowed only 75 points per game, which at first glance would seem to indicate a defense first team. However, they allowed 109 points per 100 possessions, which is not good defense. Under 100 would be an better indicator of a defense first team.
AI:
"A median offensive rating for a Division I team would likely be in the low 100s, perhaps around 100-105."
IMHO Florida a&m played a deliberate style which reduced points scored.

UC has had superior talent and depth for several years. Osborne is a great coach. His exceptional team in his last year got him to the sweet 16 and a ticket to D1 as an assistant coach.Originally posted by WVSU1995 View Post
It must have not been too bad. Osborne beat West Liberty three times in his last season at UC....two in West Liberty's back yard that year.
I am amazed that wlu has remained competitive since they have had 0 dollars in NIL.

UC was very good that year (Osborne's best team), and was clearly better than West Liberty.Originally posted by WVSU1995 View Post

But an even better Gannon team (running the same system) caused UC to crater in the second half of the regional final... probably due to fatigue.

Defense in basketball? It's rare these days, but OKC plays it and they won the NBA championship. Hope to see more of it in the NCAA. *Best wishes to Coach Lymas at Shawnee State.Originally posted by boatcapt View Post...is Fred Lymas. NAIA school in Ohio. Incidentally they are in the process of upgrading their athletic facilities, as they now own the original football stadium the Detroit Lions played in (a weird story in itself that Portsmouth Ohio had a professional football team). So football could very well be on the horizon for them.Originally posted by bballfan03 View PostWhat is a Shawnee state,? Lol
Rumor is they are looking to make the move to D2 soon. As a public school they can't get in the GMAC, so their most likely landing spot is the Mountain East conference. I actually think they would be a good fit their. And I am sure the Mountain East would welcome them.

Oddly enough, they're one of only two Ohio state school that doesn't compete in D1 sports (the other is D2 Central State). All are FBS with the exception of Cleveland State and Youngstown State.Originally posted by Bballfan View Post

It is only 1 of 2 state schools in Ohio not D1. And Central State is a HBC.
I like this move for Shawnee. Nice fit for them. Rio Grande is the other southern Ohio school to watch. But I suspect the GMAC will want them, especially since they are already ahead of the game with a football team (if they have anyone left after playing Ferris State this season).

Rio Grande is a dumpster fire. I would proceed with caution if I were the GMAC.Originally posted by Bballfan View Post
