After one of the least successful women's basketball seasons in history, long-time Ship coach Kristy Trn apparently decided it was time to go out and get some height for next season. The Raiders recently announced their recruiting class and will be bringing in two 6-1 forwards, Lilly Gerwert from Bellwood-Antis High School near Altoona, and Jane Moreland of Winchester, Va., Millbrook. The featured player of the class is 5-10 g/f Alainah McKavish, who scored more than 2,200 points in high school at Clarke County HS in Berryville, Va. McKavish's father played football at Slippery Rock and her mother played basketball at The Rock and is in the school's Hall of Fame. They'll all be first-year students next year and no doubt will have a break-in period, but if they can mesh with a couple of Ship veterans who sat out the season injured last year, the Raiders could be considerably improved in the coming season. There really is no way to go but up after last season.

Have to give credit to Shepherd, who is making a charge for the PSAC Tourney! They have found their footing offensively, and have won 5 of their last 7 to threaten West Chester for the 6th seed. They also have 6 games left, including the Golden Rams. They have work to do, but I feel they will be a tough foe in the playoffs.

After this week’s results, it’s pretty clear that there’s IUP, Gannon, and then everyone else. Seton Hill, Edinboro, or even Cal could knock off IUP or Gannon on a given night, but there’s a visible gap there between the top two and the others. The top team in the East would probably finish fourth in the West and that’s not disrespecting the teams on that side. The West is just that strong this year.

The Cal women ... that's one strange bird this year.

They either play fairly well ... or get shallacked.


IUP's bench is so deep. He's bringing in subs that would start at most other schools. They are fun to watch.

There's a reason they are drawing better at the KCAC than Joe's team (regardless of what the box scores say).

ESU defeats a Shepherd team that looks a lot different than last year. The Rams have some transfer talent, and they gave the Warriors a great battle. ESU got 26 from Brie Droege, 15 from Brooke Droege and another 12 from Lacie Kringe in the win. Senior Caitlin Marten had a career high 10 rebounds and 9 points as ESU outscored the Rams 20-9 in the 3rd quarter and 22-21 in the 4th.

ESU is in a 3-way tie for first as Bloomsburg comes to Koehler Fieldhouse Tuesday night.

Cal is much more dangerous at home than away, which has always been the case. They definitely are inconsistent. Their handled Malone with ease (a top 25 team at the time and undefeated, Yet they lost to West Chester by almost 30 (a team that both Gannon and IUP beat by 30+).

That West Chester loss is bizarre. I saw West Chester last week at IUP and they’re average at best and shouldn’t be beating anyone by that margin. Then Cal turns around and takes Ashland to overtime. Their recent loss to a decent Kutztown team was at home. It’s bizarre.

As good as IUP is, you have to believe they’re going to take a couple losses in the very strong West. IUP, Gannon, Seton Hill, and even Cal are playing really well and Edinboro is good enough to steal one from any of these teams on a given night. I was surprised to see Cal lose at home to Kutztown over the weekend though. They’re oddly inconsistent.

They are now 12-0 and won’t realistically be challenged until January 17 when Gannon comes to Indiana, and then Edinboro four days later. No disrespect to UPJ or Slippery Rock, but neither have anywhere near enough firepower to make those games competitive this week.

After a tough shooting day yesterday at Cal(Pa), ESU brought defense to Slippery Rock yesterday and shut down the Rock in the 4th quarter. Brooke Droege had 21 points and 5 rebounds to lead the Warriors. Yesterday ESU went 20-63 from the floor, just under 32%. Today they went 27-58, 46.6%. They outscored Slippery Rock 21-9 in the 4th quarter. A great bounce-back win for ESU, who finished the crossover schedule 3-3.

A scouting service by the name of Premier Recruiting Services had this to say..........."Gannon got a STEAL! She is a really good player who could have easily been a D1 kid in my mind! Good spot. Good fit for all around. Congrats! One of my favorite players to watch."

Another service had similar remarks and she apparently was looking for a mid-major offer, but thought Gannon was a great fit for her. We shall see, but Clev has history on his side and he did make the comment that " we knocked it out of the ballpark with this recruiting class". Coach Wright usually a bit more conservative about his comments so it should be interesting next year.

If she was a D1 kid she would have at least got some D1 offers. Time will tell of course. Cleve is a pretty good evaluator of talent.

Still to lock in 4 recruits this early in D2 says something and predicated on his record, its all good.

Google says the enrollment is about 3,700 in the 9 to12 grades. Got to guess it's in one of the top classifications in the state of Illinois.
