Two interesting pickups in the MEC:

• Kai Spears transfers from Marshall to West Liberty. Spears originally was with Alabama when he came out of HS in the Pittsburgh area.
• Nick Blake transfers from University of Maryland to WV Wesleyan. His dad was a stud at Maryland (Steve Blake). Blake was starting point guard when Maryland won a National Championship and went to back-to-back Final Fours.

Well...He was a walk-on at Alabama who earned some playing time. His stats are unimpressive but at least they are there. Maybe the step down to DII will result in greater performance.

Kai spears is outstanding student with very high character. Earned scholarship at Alabama after walking on.


Kai Spears, a Class of 2022 standout from Bishop Canevin High School, earned Class 1A First-Team All-State honors by the Pennsylvania Sports Writers following his senior season. The star guard helped lead the Crusaders to the 2022 PIAA Class 1A state championship.

Frustrating when you see the same problem year after year after year. Particularly when you see new teams address the flaw and win NCs.

ESU Lost one player to the portal this off-season, and apparently it was a mutual decision. Ethan Maynard. After taking the most shots on the team last season, he expressed a desire to take more shots...He also had some people making calls asking for more money. Said he was getting offers of $75K. He also said he wasn't sure he was suited for a press style defense. Buh bye kid. Losing one player to the portal seems like a win these days...

The portal hits everyone. It's sad to see money creeping in at the D2 level, but it was inevitable. That's going to make it harder to build back up once you get down — develop players and then watch schools with more money or more success the past season swoop in and grab them. I'm moving toward bigIndian's attitude. I just show up in the fall and see who's on the floor.
