just doesn't make sense. Now it puts a damper on the sold out fan bus ($165 + $42.05 for a ticket).

If he does leave, I have full confidence in Chalas or Warfield taking over.

I think he'd be crazy to leave though. Gannon wants to throw a big extension at him. He can go D1 and make bigger money, but he won't be there long. "The system" will not work at the D1 level, consistently.

The 165 didnt include the ticket???? Holy crap.

the bus trip wouldve been 330 for my daughter plus the 84 for tix.

I got our hotel, tickets (if you bought them through ncaa.com and did the fan fanatic they were only 37 each) and pre paid for parking for 308.

I figured the 165 included tix.

Wow! That’s a lot of cash. For comparison’s sake, the women’s tickets for me, my wife, and son were $43/game all in, and parking was $14 at a nearby garage.

I think as it continues to adapt and evolve, some version of that system can work at the D1 level. The original model, with a bunch of lightly recruited “gym rats” running around chucking up threes doesn’t even really exist at the D2 level anymore. Crutchfield started landing a different caliber of athlete to run it at Nova and now Gannon is doing the same. If Fee, Bazzoli and Howlett can land some dudes and make a few more tweaks here and there I think they can succeed with Crutchball at the core of what they are doing.

The biggest challenge is keeping a team together for more than one season.

The level of D1 Ben is at now is literally just a stepping stone. In and out. I made the comment the other day it seems like the entire Horizon League is in the transfer portal. It's crazy. So, can you flip in a roster yearly and make that style work in D1? I doubt it. But, we'll see.

Kim Caldwell runs a version of it at Tennessee. It hasn't worked very well.

How long will the leash be for coaches at that level? That's another major factor.

A system will fool people for a while until people start planning for it. No matter what system you're running, you eventually have to have some good players if you're going to win continuously. The run-and-gun approach does work better at the D2 level because a lot of schools don't have the depth or talent at the guard position to handle it. Even as good as Gannon is this year, a talented Cal team twice found a way to beat them and it's interesting that Gannon has a legit chance to be national champs this year without winning the PSAC tourney.

There have been coaches that have tried the run-and-gun at the high D1 level with varying success. Loyola-Marymount was probably the most extreme example, but their brief success depended as much on the talent of a couple of great players as the system, and they didn't last long. Nolan Richardson's "40 minutes of hell" worked for a while at Arkansas. Dr. Tom Davis ran a press defense at Iowa with good success for a number of years, but eventually they'd always meet someone in the tournament who could break the press and outscore them. There have been others I don't want to bother to research at the moment.

One of the best pressing teams I ever saw, not much remarked upon now because nobody 55 or under ever saw them play, was John Wooden's first championship team at UCLA in '64 that went 30-0. This was before Kareem and Walton and featured a shorter lineup that depended on speed and shooting ability. Gail Goodrich and Walt Hazzard were the stars. No shot clock in those days, but they pushed tempo and drove people nuts. The tallest player on that UCLA team was 6-7. Imagine that now. They beat Duke, which had two 6-10 players, in the final. In the next season UCLA, led by Goodrich, lost its opener to Illinois and then one 25 of the next 26. They averaged 100 points a game in the NCAA tourney and beat Cazzie Russell's Michigan team in the final as Goodrich score 42 points. Goodrich later starred in the backcourt with Jerry West on the LA Lakers.

Coaches were largely contemptuous of teams that tried to stall in the old days.

All fair points. In a world where everyone is building a new team year to year, I do think running something no one else is doing can give you a leg up if you have the right players. I’ll be curious to see what IU-Indy can do next season. Howlett got that job so late, it’s no surprise this year wasn’t pretty.

For the elite 8, we paid 27 each day for all day and 14$ a day at parking.
