These rankings are entirely by the Performance Indicator (PI) number. The formula used takes into account the record of the opponents played. It divides teams into 4 different tiers (above 75% winning percentage, 50%-74%, 25%-49%, and under 25%) and then assigns a number of points based on which tier each of your past opponents are currently in, where the game was played (home, road, or neutral), and whether you won or lost.

So, for example, beating a team with an above 75% winning percentage on the road is worth a ton of points, while losing to an under 25% team at home is worth just a few points. Head to head makes no difference in the formula. Just looking at the numbers in the table, and without knowing anything about either Minot's or Winona's schedule, it looks like their opponent's winning percentages (strength of schedule) are pretty close to each other, so the deciding factor is probably just that Minot has a better record.

The PI is just one in a number of different criteria that the selection committee will use, although those of us in the Midwest Region who have been watching Schnautza's spreadsheet for the past couple years have found that it's pretty accurate in determining who makes the post-season.

Yep, DUPanther explained it for me. It's all a numbers game, nothing to do with names.

SMSU is 1-0 against St. Cloud this year. My sense is that if they meet in the conference tournament that could be a huge game for regional seedings or getting knocked to the outside looking in.

Of course , SMSU is 0-1 against Mankato so far and hosts them the last weekend so that will be a huge game as well --

and of course, it is all moot if SMS lays an egg on the road this weekend at Wayne and Augie - which is possible. Then it will be win the conference tournament or bust. Some huge games the next 2 regular season weekends and then conference tourney play

Here's hoping that that doesn't happen from the SCSU standpoint. The first game was UGLY.

Although they deserved two losses the way they played Saturday night, Minnesota State currently had 6 losses overall (and in region).

Although they deserved two losses the way they played Saturday night, Minnesota State currently had 6 losses overall (and in region).
Looks like my source had the Upper Iowa score reversed. Here's the corrected numbers:

I retrack my statement with the updated numbers.

For now, they're still pretty solidly in the Top 7 by what I'm seeing.

Looking like a 4-3-1 split at the time, with four teams fighting for the last two MIAA spots.

The only other team that can get into the mix is Northwestern Oklahoma. They've got a blowout win over Central Oklahoma earlier this season and a chance for a big win versus Southern Nazarene. If they go 5-1 down the stretch to end the season at 21-7, they'll be on the fringes for eighth.

UCM has a tough road down the stretch. at Lincoln, at Lindenwood, vs Mo Southern and at Pitt State. then the MIAA Tournament.
