The Washburn Ichabod season kicks off with a bang with a tilt at Allen Fieldhouse against the #1 Nationally Ranked KU Jayhawks in front of 16,300 fans. The Ichabods return 5 of their top 8 in Coach Brett Ballard's second season at the helm. Javion Blake is their leading returning scoring. Dave Salach provides experience inside and Tyas Martin provides athleticism on the perimeter. Point guard Tyler Geiman returns along with football wide receiver Jace Williams as the remaining two with a significant amount of playing time from last year. Washburn will count on some young guys and some transfers to bolster their depth. Freshman: Jonny Clausing-6'9", Sevon Witt-6-7" and sharp shooting Jalen Lewis should provide quality depth along with transfers: 6'10"Pedro DaSliva from Union, 6'6" combo guard Jamaal David from Charleston Southern and hot shooting 6'3" Devyn Wilson from Portland State all should provide immediate help and fire power. Returnees 6'8" Clayton Holmgren, 6'7" Will McKee and 3pt shooting Drew Pyle should also be in the mix. This team should be more athletic than last year's team and have more front line depth. All-American Brady Skeens will be tough to replace but the cupboard is definitely not bare. It's a tall order getting the Jayhawks on Nov. 1st but it should be great experience for this talented Washburn squad. Let's tip it off and get the season started! Should be fun.

Washburn at KU on Thursday night Nov. 1st was actually competitive for the first 25 minutes of the game. Washburn was down 14 at half but fumbled away or missed several point blank shots the first half. Should have been a 6 or 8 pt. game at half. Washburn came out the 2nd half and scored the first 7pts. and cut it to 7. Coach Self called a time-out and they came out after the time-out and slowly pulled away. I was impressed with Washburn's ability to guard. KU worked hard to first half to get a shot. Washburn controlled the tempo and KU got very few easy shots. I was also impressed with the way Washburn was able to handle KU's pressure. The 'Bods turned the ball over very little and looked poised and composed in front of a packed Allen Fieldhouse. Great experience for the Washburn team. This is going to be a good defensive team and a good ball handling team. I think Washburn gained a lot of confidence with how they played the Jayhawks. I was impressed with Washburn's guards and it looks like they will have a couple of good options inside. On to Oklahoma to play Oklahoma Baptist on Friday and Southern Nazarene on Saturday. Baptist has around 9 or 10 newcomers and several D-1 transfers so they should be much better than last year. Southern Naz. has a lot of guys back and will be extremely tough on their home court. Excited to get the season started.

The Ichabods went 1-1 in Oklahoma. They ran into a very good Southern Nazarene team on Saturday. Southern Naz has depth, size and shoots the ball very well. Washburn did not shoot well but that is no excuse. Southern Naz was the better team on Saturday night. The Ichabods are fighting the injury bug some but they should be back to full strength in a week or so when Jace Williams comes out since football is over. He will give us more depth and strength on the inside. Washburn's perimeter was solid all weekend. From what I saw, I think Washburn is going to be a factor in the MIAA race. They have several home games here in a row that should allow us to get better over the next couple of weeks before we go to Vegas to take on West Texas A&M and Indianapolis right before Christmas.

The Ichabods picked up two wins this week against Rockhurst and Truman State. Washburn is playing well defensively but they have been clunky offensively. They have an athletic Eastern New Mexico coming on the Saturday after Thanksgiving and then NAIA St. Mary's next week before conference play starts the following week against SW Baptist and UCM. Javion Blake is off to a great start scoring over 22pts a game. We have had good point guard play from Tyler Geiman, 10pts and 3.5 assists a game but the rest of the starters have been very inconsistent. We are still trying to figure out our rotation. We have a lot of options but have not figured out who are going to be our "go to" guys off the bench. A 3-1 start was expected but we still have not played very well.

Good stuff, I appreciate the detail.

Seems the MIAA is off to a pretty solid start in the non-conference part of the schedule. Will be interesting to see how things start to shake out when we start beating each other up this winter.

Totally agree. The MIAA has had a great non-conference season. Clearly NWMS and Mo Southern have had the strongest non-cons so far. Washburn ran into a very good Southern Nazarene team on the home court for their only loss. The Bods did not play very well but Southern Naz is going to be a team to be reckoned with in our Region. They came back a few nights later and beat UCO by 30 so Southern Naz is legit. UCM lost to a good Sioux Falls team in a nail biter and squandered a 6 pt. lead in the last minute in regulation. Pitt State and Washburn have two very good teams that they will play right before Christmas break in Vegas. Indianapolis and West Texas A & M are both very good teams. Indy beat Valpo in an exhibition game earlier this year and West Texas A & M has one loss but started the pre-season ranked #4 in the country. There are more tests left before we get into conference season but I think the MIAA has definitely shown their strength. Good luck to you guys on the rest of your non-conf. portion of your schedule.

Southern Nazarene could very well finish with 2 losses or less this year, and would be in great position to host the regionals. Wouldn't that be something?

A lot of games between now and then but these fun seasons always fly by in a hurry.

Yes it would but I am with you, I think they have an excellent shot of hosting. They are big, shoot the ball well from 3, they have excellent guard play and they have some depth. I thought they guarded well and they have several good seniors. If they host, they will be tough to beat on their home floor. Looking forward to seeing how it all shakes out.

The Ichabods were awesome tonight. They completely dismantled a Eastern New Mexico team that was tied with UTEP with 5 minutes to go and eventually losing by 7 to beating them by almost 40. Washburn will guard the heck out of you and they are starting to click offensively. Their point guard Tyler Geiman is getting everyone involved and they are starting to look like a team to be reckoned with. Very impressive performance by the Bods.

Washburn had an impressive win last night beating a hot SW Baptist team by 25 at home. The Ichabods have been playing well all season defensively but they had been inconsistent and kind of "out of whack" on offense. Last night they looked incredible on both ends of the floor. They had 20 assists and only 10 turnovers as a team. It looks like they have settled on a nice 9 man rotation. Their bench is strong and athletic and they are very well balanced. They hit a school record 18 threes but the threes were within the offense and were in rhythm. The team play was unselfish and the defense was outstanding. Javion Blake continues to play very well with 25 pts and Tyler Geiman just missed a double double by 1 assist with 13pts and 9 assists. But the most impressive thing about the team is the bench. The Bods have 4 very talented players off the bench led by Jalen Lewis (14pts) and D-1 transfer Devyn Wilson with 13 pts and 6 rebounds. Jace Williams and Sevon Witt bring size, toughness and rebounding off the bench as well. I think this team has a chance to be really good. UCM comes to Topeka on Saturday and then the Ichabods play two nationally ranked opponents in Vegas in mid-December against West Texas A & M and Indianapolis. This will be a tough 3 game stretch and we will know more after it but I look for the Ichabods to be there in the end challenging Mo. Southern, NW MO State and Lindenwood for the conference title.

Big win tonight for the Bods over UCM by 20. This team continues to improve and they are getting consistent contributions from 9 guys every night. They lead the MIAA in blocks and they share the ball 39 assists against only 20 turnovers the last two games and they are getting great 3 pt shooting too. This team is going to contend and be a tough out in March.

Washburn with a small lead at the half after trailing 13-4 early. Play by play guy calling this one a real foul-fest with WTAMU in the bonus barely 5 minutes into the game. Something like 22 fouls called in first 12 minutes.
