  • Oklahoma D2 basketball

Unlike football, D2 basketball in my home state is actually worth discussing, but I haven't seen much discussion of it on here, even last year when two Oklahoma teams won first-round NCAA Tournament games.

One thing I want to do periodically is a power ranking of the 11 D2 basketball teams in the state. Maybe every week, maybe every few weeks.

Through 11/28/19; records include D2 games only

    1. Southeastern Oklahoma State2. Rogers State (4-0, 0-0 MIAA): The Hillcats needing overtime to beat Cameron makes me skeptical, but they're the only other undefeated team and have decent-looking wins over Oklahoma Baptist and Henderson State.
    3. Oklahoma Baptist (4-2, 1-1 GAC): Losses to the two teams above, but a nice win over Tarleton State.
    4. Southern Nazarene5. East Central (4-1, 1-1 GAC): The loss to Southwestern Oklahoma State isn't great, but the win over SNU is enough to rank them here.
    6. Northeastern State (4-1, 0-0 MIAA): They lost to the best team they've played (Tarleton State), and they haven't beaten anyone of note.
    7. Southwestern Oklahoma State (3-3, 1-1 GAC): Only team to beat East Central so far, but they also have a loss to Oklahoma Christian.
    8. Northwestern Oklahoma State (1-5, 0-2 GAC): Only win came over Central Oklahoma, but no embarrassing losses.
    9. Oklahoma Christian (2-3, 1-1 LSC): Lost to Central Oklahoma, but beat SWOSU.
    10. Central Oklahoma (2-4, 0-0 MIAA): Hasn't played anyone with a winning record.
    11. Cameron (0-5, 0-0 LSC): Showed signs of life in overtime loss to RSU.

What's on tap for the next week (D2 games only):

11/29: Rogers State vs. Missouri S&T (at Drury)
11/29: Southwestern Oklahoma State at Washburn
    11/30: Central Oklahoma at Cameron
11/30: Southern Nazarene at Oklahoma Christian
    11/30: Rogers State at Drury
11/30: Southwestern Oklahoma State vs. Newman (at Washburn)
12/5: Central Oklahoma at Rogers State
    12/5: Newman at Northeastern State

Hate to be a downer, but they were runners up, not National Champions.

Props to you for repping Oklahoma. Full disclosure, the OK schools don't appear on my mental radar until the first set of Regional Rankings come out. But maybe your efforts will change that.

      Fixed it. I wasn't following D2 basketball in 2018.

Rogers State beats Missouri S&T. Both RSU and SWOSU have tough games tomorrow.

Through 12/3/19; records include D2 games only

            1. Southeastern Oklahoma State (4-0, 2-0 GAC): Hasn't played since last ranking.
            2. Rogers State (5-1, 0-0 MIAA): Went 1-1 in the Drury Thanksgiving Classic; the loss to Drury isn't enough to drop them.
            3. Oklahoma Baptist (4-2, 1-1 GAC): Hasn't played since last ranking.
            4. Southern Nazarene (6-3, 1-1 GAC): Win over OC doesn't move the needle much.
            5. East Central (4-1, 1-1 GAC): Hasn't played since last ranking.
            6. Northeastern State (4-1, 0-0 MIAA): Hasn't played since last ranking.
            7. Southwestern Oklahoma State (5-3, 1-1 GAC): Went 2-0 in the Washburn Classic, but that loss to OC is holding them down.
            8. Northwestern Oklahoma State (1-5, 0-2 GAC): Hasn't played since last ranking.
            9. Oklahoma Christian (2-4, 1-1 LSC): As expected, lost to SNU.
            10. Cameron (1-5, 0-0 LSC): Come-from-behind win over UCO propels Cameron ahead of the Bronchos.
            11. Central Oklahoma (2-5, 0-0 MIAA): Better record than some teams above them, but against a much weaker schedule.

What's on tap for the next week (D2 games only):

12/5: Central Oklahoma at Rogers State
            12/5: Newman at Northeastern State
12/7: Cameron at Western New Mexico
12/7: Central Oklahoma at Northeastern State
12/7: Oklahoma Baptist at East Central
12/7: Southeastern Oklahoma State at Northwestern Oklahoma State
            12/7: Newman at Rogers State
12/7: Southern Nazarene at Southwestern Oklahoma State

Inkblot, nothing wrong with OK. basketball. What is the OOC record against D2 competition?

The GAC Oklahoma teams are a combined 18-8 in non-conference. The MIAA Oklahoma teams are 11-7, and the LSC (South Central region) are 2-8.

The state's looking strong so far this season. If the Central Region rankings came out today, we'd likely see four Oklahoma teams in the top 8. (The two in the South Central Region are both non-factors.)

Through 12/8/19; records include D2 games only

                  1. Southeastern Oklahoma State (5-0, 3-0 GAC): The Savage Storm are currently ranked #2 nationally in Massey.
                  2. Rogers State (7-1, 2-0 MIAA): Continues to win games in somewhat unconvincing fashion. Next D2 game isn't until the 20th.
                  3. East Central (5-1, 2-1 GAC): That loss to SWOSU is still suspect, but ECU has wins over both SNU and OBU.
                  4. Southern Nazarene (7-3, 2-1 GAC): Win over OC doesn't move the needle much.
                  5. Oklahoma Baptist (4-3, 1-2 GAC): All three losses are to teams above.
                  6. Northeastern State (6-1, 2-0 MIAA): Schedule leaves something to be desired, especially with the loss to Tarleton State looking worse than expected.
                  7. Southwestern Oklahoma State (5-4, 1-2 GAC): Bad losses outnumber good wins.
                  8. Oklahoma Christian (2-4, 1-1 LSC): Hasn't played since last ranking.
                  9. Northwestern Oklahoma State (1-6, 0-3 GAC): Losing to SEOSU maybe shouldn't have caused them to drop, but after a closer comparison with OC it seemed right to swap the two.
                  10. Cameron (2-5, 1-0 LSC): Earned second straight win, but over an even worse team than UCO.
                  11. Central Oklahoma (2-7, 0-2 MIAA): At least kept it close in losses at RSU and NSU, their two best opponents to date.

I intend to do the next power ranking after next Tuesday's games. Here's the schedule through then (D2 games only):

                  12/14: Cameron at UTPB
12/14: Southwestern Oklahoma State at Oklahoma BaptistOklahoma Christian
12/14: Southeastern Oklahoma State at Southern Nazarene
12/16: East Central at Northwestern Oklahoma State
12/17: Oklahoma Baptist at Central Oklahoma
12/17: Missouri S&T at Northeastern State

And then there were none. Previously undefeated Southeastern Oklahoma falls by a dozen to Southern Nazarene today.

Through 12/17/19; records include D2 games only

                            1. Southeastern Oklahoma State (5-1, 3-1 GAC): Suffered first loss against SNU, but that's not enough to drop them from the top spot.
                            2. East Central (6-1, 3-1 GAC): Lifted by the rise of SNU, whom ECU beat. Still held back somewhat by loss to SWOSU.
                            3. Southern Nazarene (8-3, 3-1 GAC): Huge win over SEOSU. All three losses are to teams with better records.
                            4. Rogers State (7-1, 2-0 MIAA): Hasn't played since last ranking. Reevaluation causes them to drop two spots.
                            5. Oklahoma Baptist (6-3, 2-2 GAC): No bad losses and no particularly good wins. Escaped UCO in double overtime.
                            6. Southwestern Oklahoma State (5-5, 1-3 GAC): It's not easy to move up after an 0-1 week, but NSU's profile took a huge hit. Win over ECU is much better than anything NSU has done.
                            7. Northeastern State (6-2, 2-0 MIAA): Blown lead in a loss to Missouri S&T. Two bad losses and no particularly good wins.
                            8. Oklahoma Christian (3-4, 2-1 LSC): Another win over a bottom-half LSC team doesn't change much.
                            9. Northwestern Oklahoma State (1-7, 0-4 GAC): Loss to ECU was expected.
                            10. Cameron (2-6, 1-1 LSC): Their two-game winning streak ended against UTPB.
                            11. Central Oklahoma (2-8, 0-2 MIAA): Nearly took down OBU, but fell in double overtime. They've been playing better of late, but winning has eluded them.

Here's the schedule leading up to the break (D2 games only):

                            12/19: Lubbock Christian at Cameron
12/19: Oklahoma Christian at West Texas A&M
12/19: Southeastern Oklahoma State vs. Simon Fraser (Honolulu)
12/20: Rogers State at Northeastern State
                            12/20: Southeastern Oklahoma StateCameron
                            12/21: Central Oklahoma at Newman
12/21: Oklahoma Christian at Eastern New Mexico
12/21: Southeastern Oklahoma State vs. Colorado Mines (Honolulu)

Ouch. SEOSU was up by 18 on Simon Fraser at halftime and wound up losing in overtime.
