  • All things Washburn Basketball. 2019-20

Washburn held off a feisty Emporia State team by 2 at home. The Bods stormed back from a 15 pt deficit with 12 minutes to go. On to MO West on Thurs night in Topeka.

Good win for the Bods over MO West in Topeka. Clausing went for 19pts, 11 reb and 5 blocks. Maschoff threw in 23 and Ty Geiman flirted with another triple double with 14,7, & 7. The Ichabods were not great but they are starting to come together. Looking forward to the game with NWMS on Sat.

The Ichabods turned in a great defensive effort with a 14pt wire to wire win over UCO at Lee Arena in Topeka for their 2nd straight conf win. It seems like the Bods are starting to gel after going thru some inconsistencies with 6 new guys on their top 9. Lewis and Geiman led the charge with 14 and 13 respectively along with 4 other players with 8 a piece. Washburn has found a nice 8 person rotation and they seem to be playing together a lot better. Newman comes to town on Friday. Hopefully, we can make it three in a row.

The Ichabods posted a nice victory over a gritty and athletic Newman team 80 to 67 in Topeka Saturday. Tyler Geiman led a balanced Washburn attack with 19pts. He was joined in double figures by Lewis, Maschoff and Clausing. The Bods are getting good bench play and it seems like they are really improving. They go on the road this week to play Lincoln and UCM. These are two key games for the Bods if they want to end up in the top 3 or 4 in the conference. They are playing there best ball of the year and appear to be peaking at the right time.

Observations from the Washburn @NWMS game on Thursday night, Feb. 27th. Highly competitive game. The Bods were up 9 at half primarily because NWMS shot under 30% the 1st half and Washburn shot over 50%. Washburn's defense was good all night. The Bearcats turned it up in the 2nd half. They moved the ball better and they clamped down defensively. The score was tied with 3 minutes to go. NW made some offensive plays the last 3 minutes and Washburn made no offensive plays the last 3 minutes. NW is used to winning and were not going to lose at home on Senior night. Their will to win and the way they finish games is impressive. I was proud of the Bods effort and I thought they were competitive but we have had trouble finishing games which explains our 16-11 record. The good news is that we virtually have our entire team back and our young players should be better next year. The Ichabods have played well in KC the last 2 years. I expect us to play well and be very competitive in KC. We will probably be a 4 or 5 seed which means us and MW would play back to back with the winner getting another shot at the Bearcats in the semi-finals. My hat is off to NWMS. They play great together and they stepped up in crunch time.
