Other programs have additional college or pro teams that take the focus and money from d2 sports. In Aberdeen, nsu basketball is the main attraction.
That's part of it, which actually makes Augie's high attendance numbers more impressive.

Once you get past the MIAA and NSIC, Division II fan support is much more hit and miss (primarily miss). Six of the top 10 in attendance are from our two conferences.

6500 for basketball, I don't believe that includes the end bleachers. They list the capacity for concerts, which would include the end bleachers and probably chairs on the floor, as 10000.

I can see that viewpoint...could also easily argue that Augustana is the main attraction in Sioux Falls (sorry cougar fans). No pro teams in SD, and the two D1 schools not located in Sioux Falls (although not too far away). Augustana also benefits from Sioux Falls being located in a larger community in comparison with many other d2 communities. Augustana has a few different avenues working for it....in addition to having good teams to cheer for.

The Skyforce, Storm and Stampede are hurt by the bolded statement...

Seriously though, I think you're on target here. In terms of the biggest NSIC markets, Augie's is easily the biggest market without a hockey program or a D1 team (counting NDSU for Moorhead's market and Minnesota for CSP's). Here's the NSIC population guide:

              St Paul 307,695
              Sioux Falls 187,200
              Duluth 85,884
              Bismarck 73,112
              St Cloud 68,043
              Moorhead 43,349
              Mankato 42,610
              Minot 40,888
              Winona 27,592
              Aberdeen 26,091
              Bemidji 15,404
              Marshall 13,710
              Crookston 7,806
              Wayne 5,494
              Fayette 1,477

The size of the city makes a huge difference. Washburn benefits from the size of Topeka--126,000. Fort Hays has the whole western half of Kansas and is a decent size community-25,000 but is the main game for all of the people out west and Joplin/Missouri Southern is 52,000.

I could see it being that much. Pretty impressive.
