  • Trevor Hudgins and Ryan Hawkins Playing Together... AGAIN!

Trevor Hudgins and Ryan Hawkins were both selected to play in the prestigious Portsmouth Invitational Tournament (The PIT) on April 13-16 that invites 64 of the best senior basketball players in the country. Hawkins will be representing Creighton. The PIT is the oldest amateur basketball tournament in the United States starting back in 1953. Today it is the first of two NBA pre-draft camps. The other is in Orlando. All 30 NBA teams will be represented by Coaches, Scouts, Agents and General Managers, as well as scouts from European teams. Tickets are also available for fans. There will be eight (8) teams with eight (8) players assigned to each team. Here's the exciting news ... Trevor Hudgins and Ryan Hawkins have both been assigned to the SAME team! Games will also be streamed live! See links below. An interesting side note ... the last time a NCAA DII players was selected to participate in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament was in 2012. Two players in one year? Two players from the same team? Not too bad. I wonder if McCollum will be in the stands?

Yes, they were complimentary ... pretty hyped on Hudgins from the start of the game when one of the two guys calling the game asked the other who he was most excited about on the court and he mentioned only Hudgins ... referring to him as the only guy from DII and going on a bit about his accolades. Later the two talked about his NC game performance against a talented Augusta team 'with the 7-footer' ... and Hudgins "scoring 20-pts in the first half" and "taking over the game". Definitely noted that Hudgins was the team leader as he was the guy motioning his teammates together often. They complimented Hawkins more than a couple times during the game for his defense. Hawkins got more than 20 minutes playing time, but really didn't get his hands on the ball much on the offensive side of the court. Referred to Hawkins initially as the guy from Creighton and then later in the game seem to catch themselves missing the fact that Hudgins and Hawkins had both been teammates at Northwest Missouri. They were impressed with that and the National Championships they won. The game was slow starting first half and even slow at the beginning of the second half for both teams. A lot of the players wanting to show what they could do. Team ball ... meh ... altho, certainly had its moments. Typical of most All-Star games in the NBA. Still fun to watch. Just as the guys said calling the game ... players will open up their game in the next two games for each of these teams. Each of the eight teams play three games each. Next game for Hudgins and Hawkins is Friday night, playing in the winners bracket now.

The guys calling the guy did talk about their concerns about the players having to adjust to the NBA 24-second shot clock a few times, as opposed to the 35-second shot clock at the college level. They also addressed more than a handful of times about the most familiar 3-pt shooters having to adjust to the distance of the NBA 3-pt line from the field, altho I'm pretty sure that wasn't such a big deal to probably most of these guys putting up those shots. Guys like Hawkins and Hudgins, as well as I'm betting the others, are probably pretty comfortable putting up a high percentage of their 3-pt shots from well behind the college 3-pt line. Again, like the guys calling the game said several times, these players will open up their game offensively in the next couple games as they get familiar with the atmosphere of the court and the event itself.
