Looking through the schedule and I see an absolute ceiling of 12-16 for this season. Unfortunately, a lot of opportunities for those wins will come in the early part of the season and that may be a lot to ask of a completely new team.

Haha I figured I would lose at least one person. One of the things I remember from message board discussions 15-20 years ago now was how Northern would load up their non-conference schedule with home games against cupcakes (for lack of a better term), usually the Division III and NAIA schools from North and South Dakota.Originally posted by NSU4LIFE View PostComment

Load up? They almost always played D1 exhibitions and then scheduled many local teams including NDSU, UND, Northwest Missouri State, Augie, Mankato, USD, SDSU... Not to mention the fact that an NAIA win wouldn't do them any good come regional time.Originally posted by Stanger86 View Post
I dont believe there is anyone who doesn't schedule for experience. Did they play "cupcakes" sure...but if you are implying that Don was the only one that didnt schedule the top talent in D2 or D1 games for his entire schedule or nothing, you'd be quite mistakenComment

I think this is one specific example I was referring to. Yes, this is loading up....remove the league-mandated NSIC HoopsFest and you're left with Mt Marty, Mayville, Presentation, Jamestown and Midland as the non-conference. Yes, I know they always traveled for huge D1 exhibition games (Minnesota and Purdue that year), but this is definitely loading up on cupcakes.Originally posted by NSU4LIFE View Post

Wait...Jamestown isn't a worthy opponent? I mean it isn't schedule games against alumni, but since the exhibitions count almost as little as much as non-d2, we'll call it a draw. This Wolves team is definitely more talented than last year. While i dont expect them to hang around and upset Murray, they are big and long i think they'll be able to get back to atleast a top half of the NSIC team.
Small sample size but more talent plus a coach that actually cares, I'll take that for year one.Comment

Wolves trail Wyoming 50-40 at halftime. Northern led at a few different points but mid 1st half Cowboys went on a 17-3 run and the another small run to end the half built their lead back up to ten.
Wyoming is much faster and getting to the rim has got them a large free throw margin over us, which hasn't helped.Comment

Was excited to see our seven footer, Jake Kuhl get some time, but less than a minute in he goes up for a big block attempt and comes down hard on his ankle getting carried off into the locker room.
Sundance with a great gesture of running over to him with Wilbur and checking on him and the Wyoming medical staff was there immediately.
Not many fans in the place but the fans were chanting his name as he hobbled off.

It’s hard to know what exactly to take from an exhibition game against Wyoming. The Cowboys were obviously physically superior to the Wolves as you would expect. It does appear NSU is improved from last year, but it would be hard not to be. NSU doesn’t appear to have much of a post presence again this year, but Rogers did some good things. I was impressed with Marshawn Smith. I thought he looked the best for NSU tonight. Glenn is going to make some shots this year, and will benefit from off the ball more. Bowen and Book will be solid NSIC players. Mercadel is going to make some very good plays this year, and make some very frustrating plays as well. I know it was against 2 D1 teams, but the defense and rebounding will have to better if NSU is going to win many games this year.Comment

Again, I dont see us fighting for a title, but I still think top half of the conference is manageable. Eager to see how we progress as the season goes.
I was told over the weekend that we have nine commits for next season already. No idea if thats true or how good they are but a decent season building back this program is all I need to keep me satisfied.
Really hope Kuhl is alright but I fear the worst.Comment

Some of the shot selection was…poor. We actually made more than I expected early. I don’t want to watch 5 guys stand around the 3 point line and shoot 40+ 3s a game any more. Hopefully against more even competition we can generate something going toward the basket.
I don’t know how much Kuhl was going to play this season, but the way both coaches reacted didn’t look great. Hope it is not as bad as it looked.Comment

Wolves down to preseason GAC #2 OBU 41-32 at the half.
OBU has some very good, fast guards as well as a guy the size of Shrek at center. He has almost no coordination, but when they get it to him, he just can kind of flip the ball in.
Northern is outmatched and lost Akena four minutes in, but holding their own.
The difference being we are 4-17 from deep and some of them were really, really bad attempts.
So, we are swapping OBU paint points for NSU ill-advised three point attempts.
Mercadel is going to be very, very good.Comment
