New coach, new thread. I’m excited for the Coach Wilber era to begin. Obviously, the press release is always going to be positive but there are some common themes in all of the comments. NSU and Coach Wilber know that he needs to bring a good energy and reconnect with one of the best D2 basketball communities in the country. After a couple miserable seasons, I look forward to seeing this program rebuilt to where it belongs.

Wilber wasting no time as he has offered Marvin Richard III from Pine Ridge. Probably a long shot as he also has an offer from USD and is still only a Jr. But it’s good to see an NSU coach actually recruiting again.

Energy, effort, enthusiasm, connect with people, strong work ethic, positive vibes, cares for people, i mean, if we don't win an NSIC title any time soon, bummer, but I'd take a coach like this keeping a close knit place like this for the long haul any day.

I couldn't be happier with the person we hired to be our coach.

And I mean it, winning is important, but Wachs had rough seasons, Ole had rough seasons, Meyer and Sather had a rough start, but they all fit that mold of building a future and not selling a place short. At D1 that means nothing, at this level, for this school, that means EVERYTHING.

From what was reported a year ago, his family stayed in Mitchell while Matt went to Phoenix to be on the Mercury coaching staff. So from that standpoint, I think this move makes a ton of sense for him personally. His wife is a former Augustana Viking as well and in the Augie Hall of Fame for her own volleyball successes. She is still the DWU volleyball coach.

Not really surprising, but it is the first signing I have seen for the 25-26 season. The NorthStar Athletic Association Freshman of the Year has committed to play at Northern next season. Lane Tietz from Dakota State, and from Groton High School (20 minutes from Aberdeen) will be playing in Aberdeen. I also see that the Dakota Wesleyan coach that replaced Wilber has left after one season in Mitchell. I would not be surprised at all to see some DWU players in Wolves uniforms next season. Hopefully Wilber is able to get some players above the NAIA level as well...

Really interesting schedule, we get a couple D1 exhibitions against NSU alums and some good D2 competition. Black Hills St on New Years Day is a fun one. Most importantly no NAIA games. I don't think this team will be very good, but hopefully we see improvement throughout the season and development of some players.

Also of note, I see that Coach Wilber is currently managing the Alexandria amateur baseball team. There was another Wilber (his son I think) that hit a homer to start a comeback in their win this weekend.

I am not going to set a bar for this crew. It is impossible to think it'd be anywhere near what last season was.

It seems that we'll have some experience and some talent and as long as we are competitive, ill take it. You cant rebuild what Saul destroyed in one season.

Can't wait for summer to be over and get going with some sports again!

Recruiting is going really well for Wilber. Just picked up another one today which makes that seven.

I didn't want to start a new thread for this, so, since Northern is one of the teams that will be taking part, I will throw it here. 218 Sports out of Bemidji is partnering with Bemidji State, local high schools and the Sanford Center to have Sports Showcase Weekends at the Sanford Center. One Day and Full Event passes can be purchased that will get you into all games for that day or weekend.

On January 9-10, they will host a Boys'/Men's Hockey Weekend with BSU taking on Michigan Tech right after Bemidji HS taking on East Grand Forks Friday, and Rock Ridge on Saturday.

On January 16-17, they will host a Girls'/Women's Hockey, with BSU taking on Minnesota, while Bemidji HS will take on Hill Murray and Orono (Warroad is also there and will flip flop opponents)

On February 12-14, they will host BSU's Men's and Women's games with Northern State (Thursday) and Jamestown (Saturday) with a bunch of boys and girls high school games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

What is a realistic expectation for this Wolves team? I think if they make the NSIC tournament that would have to be viewed as a pretty huge success. Hopefully Wilber can start to build something with the existing roster and generate enough excitement to bring in some impact recruits for next season.
