Northern has a couple of transfers coming in:

Nic Book - Brother of Josh Book, was at D1 SC Upstate last year. Looks like he played a few games, but then I believe redshirted.
Porter Ihnen - Was at USD the last 2 years, redshirted as a freshman and played 4 games last year before a season ending injury. He is another SD kid, which Wilber has recruited heavily.

If they are both healthy, they will likely play significant minutes and most likely start next season in Aberdeen.

Amazed at some of the "D1" schools.

Playing at Northern and the NSIC is vastly better experience than SC Upstate. More fans, better arenas, better ball.good more for that kid to come to Northern

Years ago I was in San Diego- my cousin asked me what I wanted to do for the evening, I said go watch Keith Van Horn from Utah play at San Diego State. This was before the Aztecs became a winning team. I was shocked at how few people were at the game. The Midwest has pretty good support.

Am I seeing double? No, this is the other half of the Kottke twins from the garden spot of Highway 212, Buffalo Lake!

Well - if they went D2, they wouldn't be able to tell their coworkers at the insurance firm that they played D1 every chance they get, and that's what really matters in athletics.

I'm half joking. Duke alums don't have to tell people what division they played in, though. People just kinda know.

NSIC is good basketball, not for the faint of heart.

I remember thinking the same thing when Seth Hinrichs chose D1 Lafayette over SMSU and SCSU. He ended up becoming one of the best players in Lafayette history and even got to play in an NCAA Tournament as a senior. And he's still playing professionally overseas over a decade later.....

I know a lot of transfer portal athletes likely aren't thinking this way but historically D1 basketball = full ride scholarship. Even pre-transfer portal, etc. basketball was operating this way. I know it's changing now but historically, a D1 offer meant school was taken care of.

Yes I know SMSU is affordable. Of course the privates like USF, Augie, Mary, etc. offer all sorts of additional scholarships. And yes, we all know the D2 atmosphere and playing experience can certainly be better than a lot of mid- to low-tier D1 schools. However, being able to simplify your college finances to a single scholarship sure sounds appealing in my dad brain and as a former average D2 player who had partial scholarships for football, school, whatever else.

There's the "D1" optics but sometimes it could be as simple as dollars and cents.

When a mid to lower D1 school is offering a D2 player an opportunity to move up. Are they offering a full scholarship or half or 3/4 at times or walk-on and earn a scholly?

Great question. My limited understanding is that now, as of 2025, D1 basketball teams have the ability to break up scholarships. So it could be full, half, etc. but likely varies from player to player and how good they are.
