  • Crazy Idea

Since this upcoming season is going to be reduced if played at all here is an idea. If I was a college player why not take a redshirt year or transfer to a junior college. If you don't play on the team you could then go to a four year school and still have all of your eligibility left. Also if you got your AA degree you would be closer to graduating.

Two questions.... What are the limits on redshirting players ? Could that number be increased to give significant players the opportunity to maintain eligibility for a time when playing may mean more than it does now ?

Most player take the regular redshirt their freshman year, but it can be taken at anytime. Their is also a injury redshirt for players who sustain season ending injuries in early season, but I don't know the exact rule on how many games you can play and still take a injury redshirt.

Probably not necessary to transfer to a juco. If the D2 season gets derailed by Covid-19 so will juco. If the season gets cancelled outright or a few games into the season, the NCAA is going to give those kids another year without burning a redshirt just like they did for all the spring sport athletes.

Who pays the tuition for that extra year? Who has a money tree to grant that? I doubt a school just renews a scholarship for another year...

Good question, maybe someone will jump in who can answer that question.

Couple of problems with this plan. Most teams I know of, player doesn't decide that he wants to redshirt...that is a coaches decision. If a player doesn't play at the 4-year he is at right now, no guarantee he comes back to the same level if he transfers to a JUCO. Getting an AA in and of itself doesn't get a person closer to a Bachelors, the credits earned to get that AA do. But only the transferable credits.

Particularly if the player needs the extra year because HE decided he wanted to redshirt.

That shouldn't enter this discussion. The pandemic is the reason he/she has the extra year, not the redshirt year. Coaches sometimes insist that a player sits a year as well...

The coach having a player redshirt is a different issue...as is the NCAA shutting down a season and giving every player an extra year. Coaches redshirt players all the time and for a wide range of reasons...Covid would be just another reason. What we seemed to be talking about was a player deciding that HE was going to take a redshirt because he want's an extra full season of eligibility. This would be similar to a rising junior player telling the coach he's not going to play this year because he thinks the team will have a better chance of winning the following season.

You can't hold kid accountable for a decision he made 2 or 3 years ago, without any knowledge of a pandemic hitting...If the NCAA is offering "Do-over" year, they have to pay the freight too...

The NCAA may be offering the "Do-over" year, and Lord knows they could afford it, but it's going to be the cash strapped colleges forking over the freight.

Yep. And it would be on a case by case basis. IF the particular player was a star, most schools would be able to find the $, but for the rest it is going to come down to who's been recruited and who the school can get in the transfer portal. If those players have more upside, they will get the scholly over the player with an extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA.

The NCAA won't be able to afford anything if the Final Four gets canceled again. There is no amount of insurance that could handle missing out on that for two years.

Just a guess but I'll say 70% chance that some form of MM will be played next year even if it's scaled back to a no crowd, 32 team bubble tournament.
