  • Duquesne hires Keith Dambrot, former Tiffin, Ashland head coach

Although former Akron head coach and Duquesne's new head coach Keith Dambrot is probably more known nationally as LeBron's coach for two seasons at St. Vincent's-St. Mary's High School in Akron, Ohio, he got his head coaching start at Tiffin (when they were in the NAIA) and at Ashland, where he lead the Eagles to the 1990 Elite Eight.

    Just some interesting trivia...

How could he have coached Ashland to elite 8 in 1990 and coached Lebron in high school in 2003? Did he go back and coach high school after coaching in college and then go back to college?

Yes he did. He went to Central Michigan after Ashland and lasted 2 seasons before he was fired for making what was reportedly a racist comment before a game with Miami University. That removed him from a college job for awhile so he took the high school job and was fortunate to get LeBron in his second year there. He moved on to Akron after LeBron.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette mentioned the previous racial comment in its headline the day he was hired.

Headline read: Fired for racial slur, Keith Dambrot's second act continues

The paper, which is the 'main' paper in Pittsburgh, has had a 'so so' relationship with Duquesne over the years. The Duquesne circles say the PG favors Pitt too much.

Ironically, Dambrot was heavily linked to the Duquesne job five years ago but ultimately either didn't accept it or pulled out before an official offer was made.

Keep in mind, Duquesne is going 'all in' on him. He's getting a reported $1m+ deal per year. The recently-fired coach was making half of that amount. They are also doing $40m in upgrades and renovations to the A.J. Palumbo Center.

He has his work cut out. Duquesne isn't an easy job. Seven straight coaches have been canned there. They weren't all bad coaches.

They're not entirely wrong about the P-G's treatment towards Duquesne in previous years. The P-G is so heavily invested in covering Pitt, Duquesne is pretty much second fiddle.
