  • GLVC Point Rating System

I know there has been some discussion in other posts about the GLVC tournament and selection process. I just saw the GLVC released this today about how the selections will be made for the eight team tournament in March:

    http://www.glvcsports.com/news/2018/...ournament.aspx

Point Rating System (as of Jan. 3): MEN | WOMEN

    GLVC POINT RATING SYSTEM
Head-to-head competition if the win is on the road.
Head-to-head competition with all remaining institutions in order of their overall GLVC Point Rating System ranking played at the same site, considering only contests where the tied teams played the same opponent at home or played the same opponent on the road.
Head-to-head competition if the win is at home.
A coin flip by the Commissioner.

Looks alot like the Performance Indicator. Looks like a legitimate, if not perfect, way to correct for strength of schedule. Other than winning the divisional "title", the point system makes the division set up irrelevant.

Are the points fluid for the entire season? For instance if you beat a team that has a ..500 at the time you play them but as the season progresses they fall below .500 does your points for winning also fall?

        Yes.

Not that I know for sure, but it makes zero sense to do it the other way.

Of course, now I see that the GLVC is releasing these numbers after each contest, found on the standings page of the website.

The Points Rating System also tightened up a bit after last night's results, with Drury getting a road win, Truman getting a road win at William Jewell, Indianapolis getting a road win at UMSL, and USI losing.

                1- Bellarmine (4.25)
                2- Drury (3.85)
                3- Southern Indiana (3.81)
                4- Truman State (3.77)
                5- Indianapolis (3.71)
                6- Maryville (3.29)
                7- Missouri-St. Louis (3.19)
                8- Lewis (3.00)
                ---
                9- William Jewell (2.88)
                10- Illinois Springfield (2.85)
                11- Rockhurst (2.54)
                12- McKendree (2.27)
                13- Quincy (2.21)
                14- Missouri S&T (1.88)
                ---
UW-Parkside would be 8th if they were eligible at 3.12.

They're all important at this point of the season, but games with a little extra juice this Saturday-
                #2 Drury at #6 Maryville
(#8) UW-Parkside at #8 Lewis -- could really make the top 6 feel comfortable if Lewis lost this one
#9 William Jewell at #10 Illinois Springfield -- last gasp for one of these teams?
#1 Bellarmine at #3 Southern Indiana

A system where you can finish tied with a team in your own division, beat them twice, and then end up ranked behind them in the conference is a weird system.

                        Re: GLVC Point Rating System

With one day of regular season remaining (7 games) that makes 2^7 or 128 possible W/L combinations...so I obviously haven't checked every possible scenario, but here's the ranges I'm seeing of where each team can possibly land. Again, there may be other possibilities but I ran about 10 different what-if's to determine this. Basically, 7 of 8 teams are set. WJ and UMSL will be battling for the final position.

                        1. Bellarmine. Every scenario I've run is unanimous.
                        2. Drury, Truman, UIndy
                        3. Drury, Truman, UIndy, USI
                        4. Truman, UIndy, USI
                        5. UIndy, USI, Maryville
                        6. USI, Maryville, Lewis
                        7. Lewis, William Jewell, UMSL
                        8. Lewis, William Jewell, UMSL
                        __________________________

                        9. William Jewell, UMSL, UWP*
                        10. William Jewell, UWP*
                        11. Rockhurst, IL Springfield
                        12. Rockhurst, IL Springfield
                        13. Quincy, McKendree
                        14. Quincy, McKendree
                        15. Missouri S&T (every single scenario)

If all of Massey's predictions are true (with McKendree picking up the only road win tomorrow), then we see the following lineup:
                          1. Bellarmine
                          2. Truman
T3. Drury (would win tiebreaker over UIndy in this specific scenario due to win over USI)
                          T3. UIndy
                          5. USI
                          6. Maryville
                          7. Lewis
                          8. William Jewell
                          9. UMSL

                          11. Rockhurst

                          13. McKendree

One game remains to decide GLVC standings. UMSL makes it in if they beat Maryville. Otherwise, WJ takes the last spot.
                              At this point, we have:
                              1. Bellarmine
                              2. Truman
                              3. Drury (tiebreaker over Indy due to sweeping Truman)
                              4. UIndy
                              5. If Maryville wins, they get 5th. If they lose, USI takes 5th.
                              6. If Maryville wins, USI gets 6th. If Maryville loses, Lewis beats Maryville in a tiebreaker for 6th due to winning at Drury.
                              7. If Maryville wins, Lewis takes 7th. If Maryville loses, Maryville takes 7th.
                              8. If Maryville wins, William Jewell takes 8th. If Maryville loses, UMSL takes 8th.
