  • Who's Going D1???

@Bballscoop1 on twitter saying he heard 2 GLVC schools plan on transitioning to D1 in the next couple years. Don't shoot the messenger.

    Twitter Web App

The two main guesses in the comments on twitter are USI and Drury, mainly USI for sure, also Lindenwood mentioned. Purely speculation at this point.

The interesting issue is that there is a large cost to going D1 due to sports and scholarship expansions. Does the potential fallout of Covid-19 hurt bottom lines enough to make schools reconsider the extra expense of D1, especially private schools. Here is a story Forbes did on private schools last fall...surprising to me that, according to their formula, KWC (and Brescia, a Catholic NAIA school in Owensboro) was better off financially than BU! https://www.forbes.com/sites/schifri.../#e7b29e3770d7

Latest tweet says the 2 schools are USI and Lindenwood.

The 2 GLVC schools that will be transitioning over to NCAA D1 in the next couple of years goes as follows: 1. University of Southern Indiana 2. Lindenwood University I was told that both schools have alot of money and unbelievable facilities to make the transition happen.

I'd love to see any sources cited on his tweet. The Courier & Press guy replied that it's false.

Bellarmine gets a D rating yet is going D1? Something doesn't jive there.

Every single Lindenwood connection I have has said they don't know anything about it.

Doesn't mean it's not true, but something like this usually makes it's way around internally before anyone gets a sniff externally.

Yeah, I have a solid Lindenwood connection or two, and they'd be surprised to hear this. I can see it happening one day, though, as LU has some nice facilities and seems to have an increasing enrollment.

As for Bellarmine, the academics there remain top-notch, but my understanding is that spending got a little out of control during the previous administration (to be fair, the late, great Jay McGowan did many wonderful things for BU). Between that, being fairly tuition-dependent, and the endowment taking a hit like everyone else's (I don't think it has ever topped $80M), there's been some tightening of the proverbial financial belt. As BlueBlood noted, the D-I move is definitely about more than just athletics.

USI was not financially stable enough, prior to Covid-19, to be able to afford going DI, now there is no way they are stable enough. It would be a big boost for them to go DI but Rochon had already helped put USI into a deficit and now I can't even imagine what the financials look like.

USI has coaches and facilities that could handle the transition to DI but I don't know that the administration is in place to be able to handle it.

Relatively speaking, Lindenwood is okay financially. But talking from a traditional Lindenwood perspective, this would not be a wise move. Lindenwood has always prided itself on being a financially responsible and smart university. At one point, they were one of only two 4-year schools operating in the black.

Enrollment has leveled off, just like it has for everyone, and the move to D2 proved to be more expensive than many in the organization where comfortable with.

The move could happen one day sure, but I don't believe it will be within this decade.

If this turns out to be true, I will be absolutely stunned. Every bit of information I've gotten points to this being a bogus report, so I have to go with that.
