Wow, the tables have turned in the region. 5 G-MAC teams in the top 8? It's just a shame KWC's lame staff has us in such a state where we can't join in the fun.

This has to be one of the craziest Midwest seasons we've had...Nobody with 3 or less losses, only one team with 4 losses (ranked #9), three with 5 losses, six with 6 losses, and three with seven losses, one of which is ranked #5.
It's almost like any of the current top 13 teams (these 10 plus USI, SVSU, and LSSU) could land anywhere in the top 8 yet depending on how they finish the season.

Tracking ranked team results, including the next 5 teams out using Monday's PI (USI, LSSU, SVSU, Lewis, Cedarville). Green = no losses, Orange = mixed results, red = all losses.

          1. Truman State (17-6): Road win at Maryville (7-14), home win vs William Jewell (10-13). No more games this week.
          2. Ferris State (20-5): Home win vs Northwood (4-18), road win at Wisconsin-Parkside (10-13). Plays at home vs Purdue Northwest (3-20) on Saturday.
          3. Hillsdale (17-6): Road win at Lake Erie (10-11). Plays at home vs Lake Erie (10-11) on Saturday.
          4. Walsh (16-5): Road wins at #5 Findlay (14-8) and #7 Ashland (15-7). Plays on the road at Tiffin (8-15) on Saturday.

          5. Findlay (14-8): Home loss to #4 Walsh (16-5) and home win vs Lake Erie (10-11). No more games this week.
          6. Michigan Tech (17-5): Home win vs Saginaw Valley (12-8). Plays on the road at Wayne State (5-15) on Saturday.
          7. Ashland (15-7): Home loss to #4 Walsh (16-5). Plays on the road at #8 Malone (15-6) on Saturday.
          8. Malone (15-6): Road win at Tiffin (8-15). Plays at home vs #4 Ashland (15-7) on Saturday.
          9. Southwest Baptist (15-4): Road win at Illinois-Springfield (6-15). Plays on the road at Lewis (11-8) on Saturday.
          10. Missouri-St. Louis (16-6): No games played yet. Plays at home vs. Lindenwood (9-13) on Saturday.
          ...
(11.) Southern Indiana (13-6): Home win vs Maryville (7-14). Plays at home vs Missouri S&T (6-14) on Saturday.
(12.) Lake Superior State (15-7): Road win at Purdue Northwest (3-20). Plays at home vs Wisconsin-Parkside (10-13) on Saturday.
(13.) Saginaw Valley State (12-8): Road loss at #6 Michigan Tech (17-5). Plays at home vs Northern Michigan (11-11) on Saturday.
(14.) Lewis (11-8): Home win vs Drury (7-12). Plays at home vs Southwest Baptist (15-4) on Saturday.
(15.) Cedarville (14-10): Road win at Ohio Dominican (6-18). Plays at home vs Ohio Dominican (6-18) on Saturday.

A lot of weak games for most of the teams this week. Notable exceptions are Walsh picking up two ranked wins, and Michigan Tech with a strong win over SVSU. Remaining strong matches this week are Malone/Ashland and SBU/Lewis.

This means there isn't a lot of opportunity for movement unless some big upsets happen Saturday.

Based on results thru today, I can see Walsh jumping past Hillsdale. Hard to say with Findlay and Ashland how far a quality loss drops them, but I also get the impression (looking at records) that the margins are razor-thin right now. It's conceivable that another loss for Ashland would drop them from the top 10, even though they played the toughest schedule this week.

I've also theorized over the past several years that the first regional ranking will usually feature some odd out-of-order picks in the bottom because they'll swap them out in the 2nd rankings to count more teams as ranked. (Remember, once ranked, always ranked.) This means that it's possible USI or LSSU may jump in there in Ashland's or Findlay's spots to count more ranked games in the mix. However, both USI and LSSU have pretty weak schedules this week, so I'm not banking on it. More likely that Lewis can jump in there with an upset win over SBU.

Next week features more strong matchups with Findlay at Malone, Ashland at Findlay, Cedarville at Malone, Cedarville at Walsh, Hillsdale at Ashland, Ferris at Michigan Tech, LSSU at Michigan Tech, McKendree at Lewis, USI at UMSL, Truman at SBU, McKendree at UMSL.

Looking at Massey ratings just for another perspective on the region - their Midwest order is:

            1. Ferris (12)
            2. Truman (23)
            3. Michigan Tech (24)
            4. Southern Indiana (29)
            5. Southwest Baptist (32)
            6. UMSL (35)
            7. Hillsdale (41)
            8. GVSU (42)
            9. LSSU (47)
            10. Lewis (52)
            11. Saginaw Valley (58)
            12. Ashland (62)
            13. Walsh (68)
            14. Indianapolis (69)
            15. McKendree (71)

Crazy how wildly different this is from the real rankings. I'm assuming this is using previous year's data for a baseline (to some extent), putting all GMAC teams significantly lower. It would be interesting to compare cross-conference games to see how each conference handles the others.

To follow up my last thought:

              GLVC 11 - GMAC 7
              GLIAC 6 - GMAC 7
              GLVC 12 - GLIAC 11

It appears that in head-to head, GLVC leads both GLIAC and GMAC this season, and GMAC leads the GLIAC. So it is very curious to me that the GMAC teams have such a significantly stronger showing in the rankings right now over GLVC. Biggest issue in GLVC looks like it's a very balanced league across the top this year with nobody dominating.

              Matchups are:
              GLVC over GMAC: Drury/ODU, Maryville/Tiffin, SBU/TNU, USI/KWC, Truman/Cedarville, Indy/Lake Erie, Quincy/Cedarville, Truman/Findlay, Lindenwood/KWC, UMSL/Walsh, UMSL/Tiffin
              GMAC over GLVC: KWC/UIS, Walsh/Maryville, Cedarville/USI, Hillsdale/Lewis, Findlay/Quincy, TNU/MoS&T, Cedarville/Indy
              GLIAC over GMAC: Northwood/Malone, Ferris/ODU, SVSU/Malone, Ferris/Ashland, GVSU/Cedarville, Ferris/Hillsdale
              GMAC over GLIAC: Hillsdale/SVSU, Hillsdale/Northwood (2x), Hillsdale/Wayne St, Findlay/UWP, Ashland/Wayne St, Findlay/Northwood, Findlay/Ferris
              GLVC over GLIAC: William Jewell/PNW, Rockhurst/PNW, Quincy/PNW, Indy/Northwood, Quincy/Davenport, UIS/PNW, Lewis/Ferris, McKendree/MTU, McKendree/NMU, USI/Northwood, UMSL/UWP, USI/GVSU
              GLIAC over GLVC: Davenport/Rockhurst, NMU/Lewis, UWP/Lindenwood, Davenport/William Jewell, MTU/Lewis, GVSU/Indy, UWP/UIS, Ferris/Drury, Wayne St/Lewis, Northwood/UIS, LSSU/Lewis

Update thru 2/21 - some unexpected weekend results:
Tracking ranked team results, including the next 5 teams out using Monday's PI (USI, LSSU, SVSU, Lewis, Cedarville). Green = no losses, Orange = mixed results, red = all losses.

                2. Ferris State (20-6): Home win vs Northwood (4-19), road win at Wisconsin-Parkside (11-13), road loss at Purdue Northwest (4-20)
                3. Hillsdale (18-6): Road win at Lake Erie (10-12), home win vs Lake Erie (10-12)
                4. Walsh (17-5): Road wins at #5 Findlay (14-8), #7 Ashland (16-7), and Tiffin (8-16)

                5. Findlay (14-8): Home loss to #4 Walsh (17-5) and home win vs Lake Erie (10-12)
                6. Michigan Tech (18-5): Home win vs Saginaw Valley (12-9), road win at Wayne State (5-16)
                7. Ashland (16-7): Home loss to #4 Walsh (17-5), road win at #8 Malone (15-7)
                8. Malone (15-7): Road win at Tiffin (8-16), home loss vs #4 Ashland (16-7)
                9. Southwest Baptist (15-5): Road win at Illinois-Springfield (7-15), road loss at Lewis (12-8)
                10. Missouri-St. Louis (17-6): Home win vs. Lindenwood (9-14)
                ...
(11.) Southern Indiana (14-6): Home wins vs Maryville (7-15) and Missouri S&T (6-15)
(12.) Lake Superior State (15-8): Road win at Purdue Northwest (4-20), road loss at Wisconsin-Parkside (11-13)
(13.) Saginaw Valley State (12-9): Road losses at #6 Michigan Tech (18-5) and Northern Michigan (12-11)
(14.) Lewis (12-8): Home wins vs Drury (7-13) and Southwest Baptist (15-5)
(15.) Cedarville (15-10): Road win at Ohio Dominican (6-18), home win vs Ohio Dominican (6-18)

The biggest upset was PNW over Ferris - giving Truman, Hillsdale, and Walsh a little more breathing room. Walsh clearly played the stronger week, which may be enough for 1st place.
All of the other losses in the top 10 were to good teams - very hard to say who if any will end up dropping out.
Lewis had a strong win over SBU, but I believe SBU had a little bit of a wider margin in the rankings over USI and UMSL which has just narrowed now. I believe LSSU and SVSU are likely out of the running with their losses, making room for McKendree in the list of "next 4 teams out".

Highlights this week include a heavy week for Ashland versus Findlay and Hillsdale- two losses could potentially knock them out of the running. USI and UMSL battle for a chance at proving themselves with the hopes of someone above them dropping out.

USI just played themselves out of the regional (I think), barring a conference tourney win - they absolutely needed to beat UMSL to break into the rankings. Lewis may have also screwed themselves with a loss to Maryville.

I would be shocked if GMAC gets 5 bids to NCAA, so you have to think the GLVC will get 2 bids (at least) to tournament. The question is, who besides Truman State? I agree that Lewis and USI picked bad time to lose. SW Baptist and UMSL seem to be in driver's seat/battle for NCAA bid, absent conference tournament upsets.

Well, on the G-MAC side only the top 6 teams even make the tournament this year, so Cedarville is the only one that could win the tournament that isn't already in the regional top 8.

So...wow. What a week. I originally thought USI defeated their chances of making the region, and then all of this happens. Only Walsh, Hillsdale, SBU, and UMSL make it though the week with no losses.

I believe this gives Walsh and Hillsdale a valid chance at #1 and #2 respectively. Beyond that, it's a crapshoot.
If I had to take a stab at it, I'll predict:
                            1. Walsh
                            2. Hillsdale
                            3. Ferris
                            4. Michigan Tech
                            5. SBU
                            6. Ashland
                            7. Findlay (although I think UF has been consistently overranked based on other metrics - I would personally put them and Malone at 10 and 11, moving Truman, UMSL, and USI up.)
                            8. Truman
                            9. UMSL
                            10. Malone
                            11. Southern Indiana
                            12. Cedarville
                            13. Lewis
                            14. GVSU

It may sound crazy, but depending on how conference tourneys go, I do think that anyone down to USI on that list can still have a chance at 1-8. The slew of losses this week really leveled the playing field quite a bit, IMO.

Findlay's 6-5 record against ranked teams is why they "over perform" in ranking.
