    Re: New bellarmine thread

No matter the extent of Weyer's injury, there would appear to be little hope that he could be playing by the beginning of the season. My concern is that it will be a chronic thing that does not get better, especially if he rushes back to play.

The Nick Fredrick thing is weird because he is a senior. I am glad that his father thinks he should have been starting, but if the guy was at all objective he would recognize that, at best, it was a close call. Even if Fredrick had not been starting, he certainly would have gotten significant playing time. Seems like you would just stick your senior year out. I would assume he is still enrolled at Bellarmine, but maybe not.

Yes the starting lineup means nothing tonight. Rusty did not start last year against Cincy. In fact I don't think we ever saw what I thought would be the starting five together in the exhibitions last year. With Weyer, he may be ready physically to play by regular season but being a freshman, losing a couple of weeks of practice will hurt him when he does start playing. Still think it will be January before he is playing at 100%. Interesting that Scotty called him "outstanding freshman product." The fact that he called the team shorthanded with a freshman hurt and Rhett, who is not going to be playing much anyway, shows that Weyer might have been in the starting lineup if not for the injury.

After watching tonight, the concerns about a smaller lineup should be relieved. I think we will be fine this year once we get Weyer back and a solid starting lineup.

Yeah, only one game (and I admittedly wasn't able to catch the entire thing), but I do feel a certain relief -- got to like that we out-rebounded a nationally-ranked D-I opponent.

I am really going to like Cook and Jenkins, among others. Eberhard just gets better and better. And Rusty, of course, is simply "the man."

What impressed me the most was the team rebounding, team defense and passing (18 baskets on 16 assists). That is Bellarmine basketball. Cincy was taller and more athletic at every position and we hung in well. I think the team will learn from this and hopefully carry it into the regular season.

Yeah, on the pre-game radio show, Doug and Mark noted that this may be BU's best-passing and best-defending team under Scotty. Time will tell.

Speaking of the radio broadcast, it was fine, but I sure miss my man Nick Curran doing the play-by-play.

FYI, in case any one is interested, looks like we can replay the UC game on demand:

Better passing than the Hobbs led teams would be an impressive feat.

No doubt. I'm a little leery of the claim about the current team, but we'll see. Think they've got potential.

Bell as usual very well coached. I am not sure what kind of d they played but neither does Cincy coach. Part zone part man to man. It had Cincy settling for threes that were rushed.

They played man-to-man the entire game. They harassed Cincy and for the most part would not let them get in the lane

The Cincy game gives us some early hope for a better season that some of us were grudgingly expecting - i.e. a rebuilding year. Jenkins looks like he could be a key to raising our expectations. I'm not too worried about losing Fredrick. We do have plenty of guards.

A very good game for our guys. I was impressed mostly with the defense and the rebounding. It looks as though our fears about this team being undersized were exaggerated. Offensively, was very shaky in the first half, mainly due to our best players pressing a little too hard. Eberhard and Troutman had at least 8 turnovers between them in the half. Second half was much different. I think we have two All-Americans on the team. Eberhard hit some threes and more importantly was willing to shoot them. Despite the first half when he tried to make too refined passes, he showed that the offense will go through him. I wonder how many times we will see an Eberhard pass to a cutting Troutman down the lane? It is a fine sight to see. Cook looked good. Davis was quite tough even after the first half when he really wasn't getting much help on the offensive end. I especially liked Taylor's bucket at the start of the second half. He posted up and put it to the Cincy big man. I wonder if we can get that two or three times a game in the regular season.

I think Saturday's game will be a little different. IU is good and won't take BU lightly. If we stay within 20 it will be good. I don't expect to see Rusty and Al playing as many minutes as they did against Cincy either. Don't want to wear them out before next weekend's very important games against SVSU and Northwood.

One comment by Scotty on the post game show kind of sums up this team. He said Cronin told him after the game that this year's squad is better than last year's, not because of talent but that they are just a better team. Scotty has the kind of players he likes, coachable and willing to learn. Kolo and Derksen are two of the most talented players he has ever had but I think he had to expend too much energy on trying to coach them. That may be a reason Fredrick is not on the team now too. Scotty just might not want to put up with any more "me" attitude when he thinks he has all the rest of the players in the right mindset. I am not saying Fredrick was that kind of kid but I do question why someone would quit before his senior year especially when he was set to contribute quite a bit, even if he wasn't starting.

I'm a little baffled by how well they defended and rebounded last night. I think that game went about as well as it could have for BU fans. I'm not sure if one game will show what this whole team is about but my optimism has been restored to an extent. Really impressed with the team and how they played.

I do think I may have underestimated how much better this team is without Derksen. He is a great player, but the attitude of the team seemed totally different last night than the last few years. Granted, I was not at the game, but it sure looked different without seeing Scotty butting heads with him on the sidelines every time he subbed out. I also think the offense looked totally different. The ball rarely stopped, extra passes were made, and overall it looked like everyone played well together. Derksen was great but seeing the offense end in his hand all of the time was frustrating. I think the Bellarmine offense was never the right fit for him. I do hope the best for him tonight against UofL and the rest of the season. Just glad to see Bellarmine basketball back.
Overall I am optimistic going forward. Excited to see how they handle IU

                                Re: New bellarmine thread

Being an eternal pessimist, I am irritated with the team for raising my expectations. The rebounding and defense were very good, and frankly, that was what I feared this team most lacked. If we get Weyer back, I do not believe we will have any size issues.

Al Davis played a nice floor game and I agree with Scotty that the team did not help him much in the first half. I do think it is essential that Al hit an occasional open three pointer, however.

Agree with Stalker that Troutman and Eberhard pressed too hard with their passing in the first half. Seems like we always see this against D1 teams. Their length just simply does not allow you to make passes that you get away with in practice and D2 games. I like to see guards have some penetration, but they need to learn to keep their dribble and circle out if no pass or shot is available.

I did not think UC played well. Their shot selection was terrible and they made no real effort to get the ball low with the pass. Cronin will have plenty of ammunition to beat up his guys.

Best sign of things to come (besides the team defense and rebounding): Eberhard knocking down 3's. The guy looks primed to have a big year. Look for him to have B.H. type numbers. I am predicting the third triple double in Bellarmine history for him.
