They just can't/won't pay him. Cleveland HS or Juco may be in his future.

Greg retired at this time for one definitive reason. By retiring at this late of time, he is hoping that the head coaching job will go to his loyal assistant Duncan Williams who has worked for a long time with Greg for peanuts. Greg is loyal to his assistants and former players. I am sure he would like for Duncan or Stephen Dye to get the job. I don't know if Dye even wants the job as he has a decent job at the school and has a son who has some health concerns. I know Duncan would love to be the head coach. The press release said the school will conduct a national search. It is Carrie's decision. She knows it is an important decision one month into the AD job. Regardless, I know these are going to be big shoes to fill.

Greg filed retirement papers after Perkins, Tatum and Lemon had graduated. He had had enough. He was the lowest paid coach in the old WVIAC. I know that for a fact. When he turned in his paperwork, admin did not want him to retire yet. They gave him a substantial raise to stay on for a few years. He was convinced that the extra money would help towards his retirement and what not. He decided to stay on. You never say never, but I don't believe he will coach again. I believe he is done with that aspect. He was in the private sector for a few years before coming to AB. If he were to do any thing, I believe he would go that route.

Greg can now put a lot of time into what he loves and that is the outdoors. He loves to hunt deer and if any one was in his old office, he had several mounts of buck and deer in the office. At age 65, he has kept himself in good health and good shape. It is well known that he gets out there and is an active participant in practice. He golfs regularly as well. He and his wife Tammy vacationed in Las Vegas with his daughter and her husband in June. He came back, finalized schedule, signed a few JUCOs and HS players in July and called it a career.

It is a sad day for me. He had more tournament champions, regulars season championships, and post-season bids than all other AB coaches combined. I was there for the glory years where he went 30-8 in the WVIAC tournament and went to 9 straight NCAA tournaments including two regional finals. He can still be counted as a head coach who ran the table one season in the WVIAC. You can count all of those head coaches that did that on one hand. I still believe if we hadn't lost a sizeable lead to Barton in the regional championship game that we would have won it all that year. I wish him the best and will support whoever Carrie Bodkins hires.

AB grad Randy Dobnak wins an award for his pitching performances. As recently as Monday, he was named the International League Pitcher of the Week for Class AAA Rochester. The reward came after he went 2-0 in two starts with a 1.46 ERA, seven hits allowed and 10 strikeouts in 12? innings.

Randy Dobnak with another win in AAA ball. 6 innings pitched with 3 hits and 1 earned run.

He got a nice article about him published in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

According to published reports from the Executive Producer of Baseball America, AB grad Randy Dobnak will be promoted tomorrow to the Minnesota Twins 40-man major league roster. I would assume he will be working out of the bullpen but not sure. Minnesota is currently first place in their division.

                Big props to Randy!

This is a great chance for him. The twins really need bullpen help.

Dobnak had 1 offer coming out of high school....Alderson Broaddus. He graduated in spring of 2017. He went undrafted. He played independent ball last summer. He started out in Class A ball this summer and has moved all the way up to the major league roster when it counts. We will see how he does. It is a huge jump and it will be nothing but a learning experience for the remainder of the season. But it shows you can do big things by going small.

The school has hired a swimming coach that looks to have a decent resume. Men's lacrosse has a new coach. Improvement is definitely needed in both sports. Men's basketball hire will be a big one. First day of classes is Wednesday, August 21st. Team will open up at Ferris State to start the season. Bodkins is having a chance to put her stamp on the athletic program with the ability to make some new hires.

Dobnak making his major league debut on MLB Network.

Got thru his first inning with 8 pitches.

His 2nd inning, he allowed the 4th and 5th batters for the Indians to reach on singles. He pitched his way out of the winning giving up no runs and striking out his last two. 32 pitches and 22 have been strikes.

MLB debut for Randy Dobnak.....4 innings of scoreless baseball. Parents got interviewed. Good stuff by Twins announcers.

Twins announcers said because he started at Rochester the other night and because he threw over 50 pitches tonight that he would not pitch for the Twins for a few days and will be sent back down to Rochester. That happens.

Agree! The G-MAC has gone above and beyond to cover Randy's meteoric rise to the majors. It is appreciated.

Randy will experience some ups and downs in the majors for the rest of the season. It is part of the process. It was a good start the other night as he did some good things but you can tell he has some things he will need to correct. Whatever happens the rest of this season leads into the off-season where I believe will be where he improves. He has made it to the majors at a young age....faster than a lot of high draft picks. He will learn and get a lot of coaching and training and be better next season. It was just nice to hear my school's name on national television the other night.

Dr. Jim Owston of Alderson Broaddus will be on 58 WCHS AM tomorrow morning at 9 am on the Danny Jones Show. AB grads and fans ought to turn in and listen. Danny Jones is a long-time political figure and businessman in Charleston, WV. He spent 16 years recently as mayor of the capitol city of Charleston, WV. Dr Owston will be on to discuss our newly created extended learning programs that we have established and the Meet and Greet at Black Sheep Burritos and Brews tomorrow night from 6-9PM. That establishment is located on Quarrier Street in Charleston. I hope the turnout is good. Danny has good ratings for his talk show so this is good publicity for our school. Dr Owston is a former broadcaster himself. You can listen live tomorrow at: http://www.58wchs.com/

Generally every Danny Jones show is podcasted on that site as well on that site. I heard some interesting rumors on some candidates for the men's basketball coaching job. I am trying to confirm if these are true as I believe they are. Greg had a very good turnout for his last basketball camp at Rex Pyles Arena back in June. I would think we would be interviewing during the end of this week. I will miss Zimmerman but I know he wanted to call it quits for a few years now. I think he is tired of dealing with some of today's "student-athlete".
