Lol there's a "Wesleyan" in almost every state! In this case he's talking about WV Wesleyan

There is NOT "the Wesleyan" in every state.

You're right, that's an important distinction, sir!

Stephen Dye is the new head men's basketball coach. He has head coaching experience at Glenville State. He is an alum and a heck of a player in his day. He led Glenville St to its' two only NCAA bids in school history. It was also the only time they had been in post-season since the 70s going back to the NAIA days. With that said, his recruiting dropped off significantly when his assistants left for other jobs. His last two teams weren't very talented. He can coach. His run to win the 2015 MEC tournament title was pretty stellar. He defeated two programs in West Lib and Fairmont State that had made appearances in the national championship game either closely prior or after that run.

One would think Duncan Williams will be a finalist for the Wesleyan job. Money will have to be invested in an assistant one way or the other.

Men's soccer picked 5th in pre-season G-MAC poll. That would be pretty good. Truthfully, Scott Phipps does as good as any coach at AB in terms of the total package....competitiveness, recruiting and getting his student-athletes to excel in the classroom (which they do very well). Football was picked 6th....we will see on that one.

Our opener with Grand Valley State looks to be ugly. GVSU just signed 4 quality D-I transfers to add to a squad that went 19-13 last season and returns two of their top 3 scorers. That will be just a brutal weekend with them and Ferris State to follow. I don't follow nor really care about the Midwest Region but GVSU looks to make a nice run next season with all things considered. Home opener against Seton Hill will give Stephen a better look at the season as I believe next year will be how we do against the middle of the pack to lower pack teams of the G-MAC and the Seton Hills, Salems, Bluefield States, etc. I will have info on one of our players later on next week or so. It won't help matters.

Walsh also looks like they have added some really good players to a pretty good team.

Stephen is still 2nd on the NCAA D-II all time list for three-pointers made. Dye made 443 from beyond the arc in his career at A-B. Don't forget he was hurt part of his senior season with a stress fracture.

We were 73-13 in the WVIAC when Stephen was a four-year starter at Alderson-Broaddus under head coach Greg Zimmerman. We made four straight trips to the NCAA tournament including playing in the regional championship game as a junior and also won 3 WVIAC tournament titles.

At Glenville State, he made some great connections with Bob Huggins. He had two former WVU players as assistant coaches while at Glenville State. Joe Mazzulla, who most recently was head coach of Fairmont State, was a former assistant for Dye at Glenville. Mazzulla left for the Celtics. Rob Summers, who has been an assistant at JMU and now at Cleveland State, was an assistant under Dye. I wonder if he will continue with those connections with Huggins. It might be even easier as Huggins' dad is a graduate and former all-conference player at A-B. Duncan Williams was a real good assistant for Coach Zimmerman. I just don't know his plans now. I am sure he will apply for the Wesleyan job and likely be a finalist. He was a finalist two years ago for the Glenville State job as the finalists were posted online.

Didn't the Kostelac kid from IMG Academy transfer from Akron to Walsh? Young is one of the better coaches in D2, just my opinion. He went 24-8 last year despite losing a quality kid who transferred up to D-1.

I listened to the podcast of Dye's interview as I wasn't able to listen live. Coach said Zimmerman and Duncan Williams secured some transfers before Zimmerman retired. He said he contacted all players & recruits and Dye said they all indicated to him that they plan to return/come to school. He said he spent two days evaluating any prospects in case there is a no show or two. He said he would be prepared to bring in a prospect if any body failed to show. We have one that made his intentions to not return evident two months ago. Maybe he changes his mind. I doubt it. Dye sounded as if he hit the ground running as soon as he was hired. It does help that he has experience in this.

I like what Coach Boggess has done with the women's schedule. Some nice exhibitions against State, Marshall and Towson. I like the fact that he mainly went local with the OOC schedule: Wesleyan (H), Fairmont State (A), D&E (H), Shepherd(A) , UPJ (H), Bluefield St (A) and Salem (twice). We do have to go to the upper peninsula of Michigan the first weekend but that is a return from last year. 4 of his top 5 scorers return from last year plus some transfers.

Duncan Williams has been hired by Notre Dame College as an assistant basketball coach. I hate to see him go but wish him nothing but the best. It is going to be real key that we find an assistant coach that can recruit to Alderson Broaddus.

                            • The board has changed.

We just picked up a late home game with the University of Charleston on Thursday, December 19th. It is good to see them on the schedule for men's basketball. Coach Dye was an assistant with Osborne when he was the head coach at Glenville State. We also head to Gannon again during Thanksgiving weekend. We play Gannon the first night. Ashland and LeMoyne are also there. That is a tough OOC slate. It could be a long season, but the OOC should at least have us ready for the conference slate. I am thrilled to see UC back on the schedule. A couple of the transfers should really help. We will be upgraded at the point position this season as we sat out a transfer last year, brought in a JUCO and a talented high school player from here in Maryland.

The Glenville State football game is community night and free tickets are available at Lil Moe's. He is also sponsoring a tailgate before the game with food. This is a pivotal game to start the season. Hopefully the crowd is good. I appreciate Moe supporting the athletic program with this.

I spent the week in eastern NC to visit family. I traveled around various places in eastern NC and loved listening to the southern Baptists preach on AM radio. I heard some good preaching in the Richmond area as well. It reminded me of how many good preachers that Alderson-Broaddus use to bring in to campus for Tuesday morning chapel when I was a student. I didn't miss. I appreciated the school not holding class for an hour on Tuesday mornings so every one had a chance to attend chapel service. Those were great days. Our chapel is great and sits high about the Tygart Valley overlooking the Tygart River. It is good to reconnect my faith life. I am an AM junkie when I travel even though I have satellite radio.
