    Re: Alderson Broaddus Basketball

    I would agree WVFanatic.

It is another chance against a team ranked in the Top #10. Danny has done a great job up at Wheeling. Danny has done a great job recruiting kids out of MD/VA. Of course, he coached over here in the high school ranks years back. This game will show us something for sure. We will have to have great games out of every player to have a chance to win. They give us a lot of matchup problems. And they are very balanced scoring-wise. They really have no weakness. Their only loss was to Fairmont in OT and it looked like WJ should have won.

WJ's front line is good with Highsmith, Ritz and Moseh. Highsmith's dad was real good at Fairmont back when I was in school. His son is just as good. Boswell is one of the best freshmen in D2. He will be a player for years to come. Lawson and Hilson are experienced players that produce as well. They are deep for a D2 school. This is a game they won't take likely. They want to host again I am sure. With West Lib, Fairmont and Shipp in that region, there is no room for error.

We need Foster to hit his shots. Harper must step up and not have a down game. We need continued play out of Cooper and Sanders. Mitchell has to show up for this one. Bocook has to be good on both ends. Turnovers have to be limited. We will have to out-rebound them to win and that will be tough with that good of a front court. This game will make us better. I am going to try and make it end if things work out. It is good to get to play a Top 10 team. The top teams in the Atlantic are much better than the top teams in the Midwest.

        Re: Alderson Broaddus Basketball

I believe Ja'Darien Wade was to start practice next week after surgery on Nov. 17. He was supposed to be out 6 full weeks before returning to practice. It will take time to bring him back to game action. I haven't talk to any one as I have been in the Carolinas for a week. I assume most are good to go. I was going to go today but the Winter Storm Warning in Garrett Co scared me off. Looking at the cameras on I-68, I could have made it easily. I will be there next Saturday against a good Washington Adventist squad. A win would be nice tonight but that might be a real reach with our sporadic play. Wheeling is legit. They beat us by 11 up there last year and that was with 3 good seniors on our squad, although it was a 4-point game with three minutes left. But this is pretty much the same Wheeling team as last year as four starters return from a team that hosted a region last year. Plus they added a super freshman and two quality reserves. We had all kinds of problems last year with Moseh and Ritz. The Malone game will probably be a better barometer, but it could be interesting if we play like we did at Shepherd and hit more shots.

I watched the live stream and Wheeling is tough. They didn't shoot the ball real well but more than made up for it on the glass. Haven't had the chance to look at a box score but I would say they had close to 20 offensive rebounds. Bocook looked solid and he is going to be the go to guy, only problem I seen was there wasn't a second option

              Re: Alderson Broaddus Basketball

I watched the 1st half and that was all I could stomach. Let me first give credit to Wheeling. They are far better than us. Ritz, Moseh and Highsmith would all have double-doubles if Ritz and Moseh each had 1 more rebound. Boswell is a heck of a freshman. They are good for this season and next. Ritz is good at posting up and Moseh and Highsmith can beat you in several ways. Danny has done a good job there. I believe the Atlantic goes thru WV teams because I believe one of the three will host.

I saw guys come in off the bench and fire up a 3 on their first possession. I saw a switch on a screen and Boswell gets it and we give him three feet to nail an outside shot. That was by an upperclassman. Sanders and Bocook do pretty good. But you have to have 5 or 6 guys show up to beat Wheeling. Malik only has two games under his belt as a college player. He will continue to grow.

I watched the women instead of the men in the second half. I am hesitant to say the women are starting to turn the corner, but they are making strides. I am not into moral victories, but the ladies have been drilled in similar games in year's past. They are far more competitive here lately and that says something.

*It was a 6-point game in the 4th at Wheeling who is 9-1 and ranked 18th nationally.
*We scored 90 points at Glenville which is 9-1 as well. We used to lose by 50 to them back when Harold or Bunky coached the Lady Pioneers.
*We lost by 9 at Seton Hill which is 8-4.
*We beat WV State which is 5-5 and 2-2 in their league. Cookie does a good job there.

I know we lost to Point Park but they are 13-3 and two of those losses were to D-I programs. We have played some really good OOC teams. We have also played some real young players. Devyn Bonner is playing like a bull in a china shop lately. This freshman is impressive. She had 17 points and 8 boards against some seasoned Wheeling players. She had 25 against Glenville, double-double against State and 20 against Seton Hill. She is very strong and agressive. Our best two players men/women are freshmen from Zanesville.

Nassiah Bray has been consistent as a sophomore. Lorin missed the first couple of games of the year and played hurt for awhile. She looked better the last night with some rest. She is a quality senior. Danielle Franklin (Fr) and Jordan Parker (Jr) are good players. Parker was off last night. I give Tierney credit for scheduling so difficult. Other than Washington Adventist, which was a game needed during finals, most schools are pretty good. Bowie State is 10-2 I saw.

They are competing much better than years past. Maybe it is fool's gold but I saw so much hustle and winning loose balls. Bonner gets the ball on the block and look out....strong. We might be the last place G-MAC team as predicted, but we won't be a pushover this year. I have been waiting for 15 years for our women's team to turn a corner and get out of the bottom. Maybe not this season, but the young talent is better.

The men simply look like a team that hasn't played together and has little experience. But they keep making the same mistakes. Malone at this point means more anyways and I said they would be a better barometer. It will be interesting if we recruit Hudkins or Upton off of Philip-Barour's HS team which is looking pretty darn good. Wade looked to be off crutches last night. I guess we will see in two weeks if Mike Davis arrives. I haven't heard much on Simmons.

                Re: Alderson Broaddus Basketball

I noticed the same thing as well. First touch off the bench a 3 flys, slow making plays, too many close easy ones missed, etc. Sanders has played well the last handful of games and Bocook I think will continue to get better, but as you said it's going to take 5-6 to best any good team. 10 games in the mental lapses and the same mistakes have to be gone

                  Re: Alderson Broaddus Basketball

The easy layups would have helped stop the bleeding in the first half when we needed any bucket. That was a nightmare of a 1st half. On to Malone which I know little about.

Malone has added a veteran player who did not play 1st semester. He is their leading scorer after playing the last two games. Christian Graves is a 6'2" senior who returned against Notre Dame and had 21 points. He only played 15 minutes the other night and had 12 points. He has 9 assists to 1 turnover which is a sign of a veteran player.

We need to cut down on turnovers and easy points off that. We have to play far better defense. We are too athletic to be playing crappy D. We need a couple of wins back-to-back to get us going. I just don't think we are there tonight.

I couldn't watch the last two games due to working late. I watched WBOY and WDTV highlights and followed on live stats. I did see we went on a 18-0 run in the first half which is good. The defense was solid last night it appeared until the last seven minutes apparently. Here are highlights:

I will be at the game tomorrow night at Washington Adventist. They are really good and people should forget the NAIA label. They are nationally ranked in NAIA and are 13-3. They lost on Tuesday to #2 Georgetown by 3. There only other two losses occurred during a long road trip where they spent five days in KY and WV. They lost in the second game of a tournament to Lindsey Wilson by 2 and then lost to WV State on day 5 of staying in hotels. They never lose that game if it was a one-day thing. They are 4-1 against D2 competition. That guy does a good job recruiting and coaching down there. I am familiar with a lot of their players. We will have to play our best to have a chance. It is a good game though to make us better.

                        Re: Alderson Broaddus Basketball

                        71-17

                        Battler fans,

That isn't the score of any game we played in. That is the cumulative foul shots that the opponent's men's and women's team shot on Saturday as opposed to our FT total. I was asked to cover the men's game by someone in AB's SID department. I did so on social and kept my comments pretty reserved on media. There was no video or live stats.

I can deal with losing. I also don't believe that it is the officials responsibility to keep free throw totals close. Style of play will dictate that often. I payed to watch both games.....one on vid and one in person. I decided not to post any thing in haste on Saturday. I slept on this for three days and am still uneasy by what I witnessed. I can deal with the men's game going in that direction as we were playing a NAIA school at their place. We had our chances there and did not play well with the lead. The game got away late and we still have guys not hitting open shots. I rarely agree with Head Coach Greg Zimmerman's demeanor towards refs at times. But he had a real beef on Saturday and did a great job of not getting thrown out. He would have had to miss the next two conference games if he had. There was no question what was going on Saturday night. I have been around enough to know that. They out shot us 29 to 5 at the FT line and I will add that two of our FTs were shot with 33 seconds left in the game when the game was decided. I have a copy of the stats to prove that. I have a problem when calls are not called consistent on both ends of the floor. The game started out 8 fouls on AB to 1 on WAU. The 8th team foul was on Cooper posting up the 6'10" center and I have no clue what the foul even was. On an AB 3 on 1 break. The ball was passed 10 feet from the basket to Bocook who had a 1-on-1 attempt on a 5'10" guard. The ref stopped play when Bocook got the ball to go to the scorer's table and startt the shot clock which you are not supposed to do in transition because the clock is not in play. It is to be stopped if the ball is backed out. The second half started out 7 AB fouls to 1 on WAU. We had the lead most of the game. The game unraveled when Reggie Robinson dribbled the ball up the court and never picked up his dribble. He was whistled for traveling while still dribbling. Zimmerman went out on the floor and got T'ed. I thought he got tossed because another T was called. He stayed in the game and I thought it was on Cooper who got very animated with a ref. I found out after the game that it was Robinson who got the T. It was never called the same way on both ends of the floor. Zimmerman unfortunately took himself out of the game at that point. WAU is talented. Their 6'10" center is the real deal and Fleetwood is an awesome guard. But there was no need for that crap. Bocook and Cooper played great games. Bocook played off the charts. Other guys missed too many open looks. I guess I want to thank the crew for giving us 2 FTs at the very end of the game when it didn't matter. I will just say we had our chances despite some real blatant inconsistency in calls. We missed our chances on play of the floor.

What I have a real problem is what happened in a conference women's game up at Ursuline. I am starting to get the feeling that this league is trying to protect top teams in this conference for whatever reason....trying to get better position in regional rankings, try to get two teams in, etc. But what I witnessed on Saturday was absolutely egregious!!!!!!!!!!! We narrowed the game to 1-pt at the 4:54 mark of the 3rd quarter to make it 49-48. The girls were playing intense and hustling all over the floor. They were making plays. Our freshman Devyn Bonner was putting the ball in the basket when she got it in the post. 22 points and 6 rebounds and I thought she got hammered a lot more than was called. She got credited with some turnovers when I thought she was hacked. At the time we narrowed the margin to 1 point, Ursuline went to the free throw 23 times the rest of the game. We went to the free throw line 3 times the rest of the game. And it wasn't as if we were out jacking 3's. They shot 10 more 3-point attempts shots than us for the game. I have a real problem with what went on from that point.

We shot 50% from the floor to Ursuline's 24% in the second half. We were 3 of 3 from beyond the arc in the second half. Ursuline was 0 for 11 from beyond the arc in the second half. At the time it was a 1-point game, they went to the free throw line of 5 of the next 7 possessions; it wasn't like all the foul shots were at the end of the game. I realize that Ursuline returns three 1st-team all conference players. I could say they will beat us by 20 when they play us in Philippi later on. But I don't think they were the better team Saturday. And I don't think them going to the NCAA last season warrants getting calls like that. Huber got the Duke treatment on every play. I think from the 4:50 mark to the end of the 3rd quarter, she went to the line almost ever time she touched the ball. Any slight bump or hand on her was a whistle. Bonner, because she is built thick and strong, rarely got a whistle and the contact was even worse.

Like I said, I can deal with losing. We have had enough of that this season. But Saturday was on a different level of intentional absurdity....71-17. I defend the women a lot more because we were out shot 42-12 at the line in a conference game. The men were outshot 29-5 and you can expect those things when playing an outfit like that. Our women have a poor record to this point. But the teams we lost to have a 79.2% winning percentage. And the women have narrowed the gap in the most recent games. Bonner (Fr), Parker (Jr), Bray (So), Franklin (Fr) and Hopkins (Fr) are starting to play a much higher level than they were to start the year. This team is more seasoned at this point. We have started to recruit better. Bonner and Hopkins could be a great inside tandem if Hopkins improves more and more. The future of AB women's basketball team is bright and I think it will get better in February.

                          Re: Alderson Broaddus Basketball

Good win at home to move to 2-0 in the G-MAC. Alderson Broaddus 78 Cedarville 57.

Good defensive performance both halves. Much better offensively the second half. We shot 57.4% for the game. It had to be much higher second half. Holding them to 31% is pretty good. Bocook double-double, Cooper with another excellent game especially in the 2nd half, Sanders was solid, Harper doing what he should....rebound and put backs. We have to get Foster on track. Reggie Robinson is starting to get it as a freshman and that needs to continue. He could help us a lot down the stretch as could Ace Jackson if he starts to understand things.

Still too many turnovers....18 and it was 9 each half. Some were on good opportunities in transition. I saw some things we still need to work on, but that is good. We are now 4-1 against D2 competition since Bocook got eligible with the only loss being to a Top 10 Wheeling squad. He didn't have near the game he had the other night. The Washington Adventist thing....we will find out some more in a few weeks. G-MAC games are what matters now.

Ohio Valley is a must. Their leading scorer and best player also got eligible at semester. I thought he was good last year. We need to come out stronger against them and take care of business. I want to be 3-0 in the league after Saturday night.

I thought the women fought their tails off without Bonner, Bray and Hopkins for the second game in a row. Bray was on a crutch. I don't know Bonner's injury but that hurt not having her out there tonight. Lorin Clark busted her tail out there tonight Lorin had 13 assists, 1 turnover, 10 points and 7 boards and I mean got after it on the defensive end.

Hats off to Lorin for the assist record. I know it was Bluefield State, but she would have tied the record last night with her performance against Cedarville where she had 13 assists. She currently leads the G-MAC in assists and steals.

There is no doubt that if Wade had not got hurt that he would be in the starting five over Foster or Harper. It would have given us another offensive guy with extreme hippity-hops. He was on the bench in civis and walking without crutches last night. Unfortunately, he has missed a lot of games as we have not had him since the first game. He would have been a big asset on the offensive glass and offensive production. He is also a great team guy. It will take him some time to work himself back. Bocook is a serious talent! His passing at WAU was uncanny. Had we made some of those open shots, he would have had 6 or 7 more assists.

The Shepherd road win is starting to look good as they took Charleston to the cleaners the other night and WV State for the that matter. They are 4-1 since the break. We also played well at Washington Adventist. During the final ten minutes of that game, we looked like a young team that had played 3 games in 5 days. I thought fatigue may have hurt us some. They have some serious players. We did some good things defensively last night, but we also had some serious breakdowns and let them get loose for some 3 looks....some they made but a lot they missed. We still have a lot to work on and improve on for both ends of the floor. 18 turnovers at this point of the season is ridiculous.

My son and I may go over tomorrow but it is supposed to be snow and freezing rain in Garrett and Preston counties. I can't deal with freezing rain and driving in those mountains. I would like to get up there and talk to some people about a few things. The only other chance I would have to get up there is Trevecca or D&E.
