  • Coach Sparling Fired at CWU

    http://wildcatsports.com/news/2018/3...ead-coach.aspx

CWU is parting ways with Coach Sparling. I knew this was coming. Like Romar with UW. A ton of success in the past, but several years of disappointment despite having great talent like Mark McLaughlin, JB Pillard, Dom Williams, Gary Jacobs, Joseph Stroud, Kevin Davis, Fuquan Niles. CWU has great players in place like Shabazz, Williams, Cola, Montoya, and hopefully still young Sparling and Matt Poquette. Time to get someone who can get these kids to the GNAC title game. Look what SMU has done the last couple of seasons.

Sad to hear this, but understandable. He certainly was loyal. I always hope a guy like this is kept in school administration, but I realize there are not always openings.

The Whitman coach would be a scary hire for CWU opponents.

CWU commit Matt Poquette decommitted. He also had an offer from Concordia. Poquette was named 2B State Player of the Year

It's hard to lose a longtime coach like Sparling, but it also presents an incredible opportunity. CWU is not one of the tougher locations in the GNAC to attract good coaching talent to... The future is bright if they can make a good hire!

I read the tweets of his former players, wow, he was really liked. He really connected with his student-athletes, there's something to be said about that.

Yeah he was well liked and respected. Seems like his players would've been plenty satisfied if he stayed. But with all the young talent on the team I am ready to see what a fresh face can do with them

Some mixed feelings on that guy ... if he is the guy. He has the Zag recommendation, I'm sure. He's bounced around a lot, D2 in the Midwest, EWU (NCAA), Utah (fired ... though a Sweet 16), Zag assistant, Drake (fired or quit early). Might be good, not sure. I'd make a run at the Whitman coach, winning 30 games a year at a program that wasn't much until he got to town. But then again, I'm not wired into CWU or their needs, maybe Giacoletti would be good. Need to get more than a 2- or 3-year commitment out of him, however.
