  • GNAC Freshman of Year Shabazz to Transfer?

    https://twitter.com/RSKuhn/status/986277528317800448

Breaking news as reported by the town newspaper's sports editor. CWU may be losing GNAC Freshman of the Year, their star player Khalil Shabazz.

Shabazz has not tweeted anything about transferring yet. But he posted a recent tweet that was actually directed at the athletic director: https://twitter.com/Khalilshabazz0/s...61353684156417

If he does in fact transfer, this would be a major blow. We will see who else follows him out. Lots of these players were really close to Sparling and feel betrayed.

Reminds me of Romar getting fired at UW. They lose their #1 recruit and a couple others. But they still went on to win 20 games and make a tournament under Coach Hopkins. So in the long run, things will work out very well. I hope.

I didn't see anywhere in the post that he said he was transfering. He did call out the A.D., however.

But the first tweet from the sports editor says he plans to transfer.

That's not good. The talent drain from the GNAC has been significant in the off-season, other than normal graduations (POY Omlid, NNU's Jones, etc.), we've now seen WWU's two best players leave, and potentially Shabazz gone. At least it appears St. Martin's is keeping all their guys. I like the GNAC talent to stay intact.

Senior forward Jerome Bryant is responding on his Twitter: https://twitter.com/Jay25Rum

Coleman Sparling simply tweeted this: https://twitter.com/Sparling_23/stat...84081691246593

Naim Ladd recently Tweeted "Decisions" but deleted it.

A ton of turmoil going on at CWU right now. Not sure exactly what went down between the AD and the players. My only guess is that the AD didn't like how the players were responding to the departure of Coach Sparling or to the lengthy search for a new coach. Whatever it is, it could prove costly for the Wildcats.

This A.D. has had a coloful career ... I don't mean that in a good way. I was skeptical of the hire when they made it. Did he really tell a bunch of basketball players who just lost their coach that they have low character? I follow the GNAC fairly well and I don't recall any of these guys being in trouble with the law.

Maybe CWU made the wrong fire. Shouldn't have been Sparling, should've been the A.D.

The AD has been excellent. He cleaned house with the football program and brought in an excellent coach. He chased out the women's basketball coach and brought in one who completely rebuilt that program. He found a great new softball coach from a D1 SEC program. He raised rugby to varsity. And now he is looking to bring back the men's basketball to dominance.

I am sure what he said is out of context. I am not going to judge unless I hear the whole story. I can see how the basketball players could have a bit of an attitude about the whole situation, but that is because they were really close to Coach Sparling.
