  • Simon Fraser's Othniel Spence Leading Petition to Change Clan Nickname

Simon Fraser basketball athlete Othniel Spence wrote a very moving piece that explains his struggles with racism and his discomfort with Simon Fraser's "Clan" nickname. I urge you to read this fully: https://www.theparkjournal.com/featu...-your-clansman

An online petition was created and it does look like Simon Fraser will be considering changing the name here soon

I know people in the football board are against this but if you are going to play American intercollegiate athletics, you can't have a name called the clan no matter how it is spelled.

Also, I am guessing people commenting on the football board are not African-American and shouldn't be speaking for African Americans or black Canadians.

I have already had a couple of insensitive comments on my Facebook page, as well. No compassion in some folks

One guy in the football board says people need to educate themselves about the Canadian term. No they don't. I shouldn't have to bring a history book to a sporting event. But people don't like his change in this country, they don't like that minorities are getting some rights. There's no way that term should be used as a mascot, especially if you play American collegiate sports.

A player shouldn't have to cringe every time they hear Go Clan, Go
