  • UAA Athletic Cuts

UAA has cut all its D1 athletics (Hockey, Skiing, Gymnastics) today but have elected to keep all its GNAC sports untouched.

An outdoor field sport in Alaska? I don't think it will be soccer or lacrosse. Maybe wrestling, swimming or water polo? But wow those are touch losses, especially hockey

UAA must add a men's team sport to remain in the NCAA.

        Men's team sports are:
        *Baseball
        *Basketball
        *Football
        *Lacrosse
        *Soccer
        *Ice Hockey
        *Volleyball
        *Water Polo

Soccer is probably the best option because it is a GNAC sponsored sport. A field could be constructed and covered by an inflatable bubble.

Well, the regents did leave some wiggly room for reinstatement.

Yes essentially self funding. Going to be really difficult in the economic climate of Alaska right now to raise those funds. But you are correct there is a chance.

I think the right decisions were made here in that there was a need to cut down on the number of teams a bit and I think the right teams were cut and the correct team was saved. Far more outstanding nordic skiers coming out of Alaska making it to the US ski team than most any other sport. The hockey team at UAF will have an uphill battle in figuring out a way forward after this season regardless, so... we'll see!
