  • Remember Brendan Howard?

Here is another former GNAC star we completely forgot about: MSU Billings' Brendan Howard! Remember after being the GNAC freshman of the year and being all-conference, the former EWU transfer decided to take his talents to North Dakota. Well, he averaged 7.3 points in 13 minutes in 12 games before he decided to transfer mid-season in search of more minutes.

He ended up landing at local Montana NAIA college Providence, his 4th college stop, where he was able to start playing mid-season and play in 11 games. He started in all games, averaging 21 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. If only he stayed put in the GNAC.

Classic example of a kid out-thinking it and getting bad advice. Four schools? How do you get traction as a student, establishing professional non-sports contacts, internships, etc. If you're not playing at North Dakota, you're not making the pros.

Instead of getting inducted into the MSU-Billings Hall of Fame, now he's just a guy. Honestly, never heard of Providence College, except the one in Rhode Island.

Same, I had no idea there was one in Montana. They finished last season in last place with a 2-13 conference record. Funny that the full-time league scoring leader (20.4 ppg) was also from Providence.

The pathway that Brendan Howard took post high school might be the strangest I've ever heard of. D1 recruit out of Great Falls HS (where, incidentally, he played for his Dad). Didn't like it at EWU, so after redshirting he gets recruited by his brother, Bobby, who at the time was an assistant at MSU-Billings.

Howard does great at Billings but post Covid tries to make a return to D1 so he signs up to play in the Summit League up in Grand Forks, ND. As previously stated, his playing time and stats weren't eye popping for UND so he calls it a career and heads back to Great Falls. But not so fast! Providence of the Frontier Conference in NAIA reaches out to Brendan to see if he's interested in transferring. He takes them up on it. And the rest is history.

One funny side note, he actually burned 2 years by taking Providence up on their offer and in essence ended his career by finishing the season in NAIA. He could have landed somewhere in 22-23 for his final year of ball (he had used that free Covid season like everyone else). But the NAIA / NCAA combo this season burned 2 years for him.

Strange times we live in with college basketball.

Kids are getting bad advice. He had a nice gig with a fine coach in Durham at Billings, in his home state. He outthought it. For a similar but worse path check out the college career of Seattle's Sam Cunliffe, who had a starting gig locked up at Arizona State as a true frosh. He played one semester, someone told him to transfer to Kansas, where he barely played for a year. Left for Evansville, where he played for a little more than a semester and quit. He also played for four high schools. I read a recent story where he said he should've stayed at ASU ... yep

Regarding Howard, just foolish stuff. Also, if I'm an employer and he steps into my office I'm going to ask him a few things like where's his academic internship, why didn't he do one? Was he too lazy? Why does he jump around so much? What qualities does he have besides being tall and a decent small college basketball player? These guys aren't going pro and if they are it's a short-lived stint in some tiny, foreign country. The foolishness here needs to stop and there needs to be some media coverage on this.

University of Providence used to be called University of Great Falls. It was founded in 1932, and has two schools, one Liberal Arts & Sciences, the other School of Health Profession.

They have had some great success in some of their athletic programs.

Thanks for the info, I like University of Great Falls name better. That said, I looked at MSU-Billings academic offerings and they have a nice variety with some good programs. Howard was the main man at MSU-B, with a fine coach, getting all the shots and minutes he could desire, attending a fine university. I seriously don't get leaving that situation. Look through that portal, however, and most are head scratchers and looked at a small sample size: most don't improve their scoring averages or get more minutes.
