  • CWU's Nicholson Pavilion completely changing

Those who follow GNAC bball and specifically CWU basketball probably already know that Nicholson Pavilion is undergoing a major remodel, but that doesn't begin to explain it. I took a tour of the construction site and it's a game changer. Adding a second level of chair back seating on the reserved side, catwalk around the second level for 360-degree accessibility, added bathrooms, added concessions, video boards, LED lighting, added ADA accessibility, almost doubled the space of the field house which will include field turf and a 70-meter track to where T/F, baseball and softball have a place to practice in the same building at the same time in the snowy winter. Updated lockers, all new weight room, huge foyer space, welcoming space, atrium, incredible amount of office space, storage space, meeting rooms. The neighboring Purser Building is now connected to Nicholson, and that is undergoing some major renovations as well.

Once completed, hopefully around September, I believe they will be changing the name to Nicholson Arena. Can't wait to see the completed work.

Sounds awesome, is the multi-purpose part a new addition bordering the football field?

The new addition to the multi-purpose field house is toward the east where the football field is immediately north of Nicholson. But as you can remember that grassy area between Nicholson and Tomlinson Field is smaller with all the changes.

That’s great. Having a nice stadium and state of the art training center like UAA has had can be a game changer recruiting wise. Well in UAA’s case it’s just been an equalizer to actually get kids to come to Alaska to play ball.

Exactly.............CWU has invested millions in their football complex, recreation fields, soccer, rugby, T&F facilities. Now they've focused on the Nicholson renovations. It's definitely an arms race. Maybe not to the extent of Pac12, Big12, Big10 and SEC, but we're seeing some significant improvements in athletics.
