  • There's the B1G, and then there is everyone else

Every Big 10 school now receives a mind-blowing $52 million per year from the conference's TV package. The SEC is a distant 2nd, and the other three P5 conferences are not even in the conversation. Simply incredible. Maryland, Rutgers, and Nebraska pretty much hit the proverbial lotto with their moves to the conference.

Don't know if that helps them on the field, but it sure greases the skids!

And some people keep insisting that Nebraska will go back to the Big 12. They must live on Fantasy Island.

Maryland was broke- this has been great for them. Rutgers was brought in strictly for TV exposure. There were a number of schools that should have been brought in instead but $$$$ talks.

I would wager that any program in the country that was offered a seat at the B1G table would take it, except for Notre Dame of course. The money is just too great.

I actually think the moves made sense. Rutgers and Maryland delivered mega TV markets, and Nebraska was unhappy in the Big 12 and remains one of the all-time winningest college football programs even considering the last couple of years. Those three programs caught lightning in a bottle for sure. The three programs were lampooned for the moves, but they knew what they were doing and so did the B1G - the contract speaks for itself.

It helps that the BIG now covers 6 very large TV markets while the other conferences do not.

        New York
        Philadelphia
        Baltimore
        Washington
        Detroit
        Chicago

Add in they have the whole state of Ohio in focus too.....

As well as being the only D1 football school in Minnesota, Nebraska and Wisconsin. They essentially have the Midwest on lock as that is there historic foothold but like you're saying they also have the eyes of 2 of the largest 3 cities in the country and other major stations

Won't happen as long as the Longhorn Network is still a thing.

I'd be surprised if that happened. Too many schools in the BIG that wouldn't allow them to run the show. Colorado probably would have left anyway, but Nebraska and A&M left for greener ($$$) pastures.

After the Grant of Rights expires in the Big 12, you'll see Texas and OU go to the B1G. It will give the B1G a southern footprint that they desire, and clout to negotiate a further blockbuster TV deal. When that happens, look for the next round of TV deals to generate $75-80 million per B1G school. In the B1G, every school has a seat at the table. There isn't one school making all the rules while everyone else falls in line.

It will essentially be the NFL of college football.

That may be true, but the Big Ten Commissioner does have a blatant soft spot in his heart for Michigan and Ohio State.

I would say that the SEC has that title. And I live in BIG country.

The SEC has sent the most players to the League for 12 consecutive years. https://www.usatoday.com/story/sport...ces/562237002/

LHN hasn't been as profitable as ESPN hoped. I could see them backing out of that deal after the contract is up. Or, as much eyeballs and revenue the state of Texas would bring to the B1G (or any league), I could see a conference buying out the LHN contract (if its permissible).

Actually the commish has a soft spot for his alma mater, North Carolina. He'd love to get UNC, Duke and/or Georgia Tech into the Big Ten as well.
