If the morons at the NCAA wonder why the trend of various teams, conferences and states are moving away from their leadership, they should look closely at this decision. Punish the coach and school as much as you want, they were the guilty ones. The team, especially at D3 level, are playing for the love of the game and in NO WAY deserve to lose the championship they worked so hard to achieve. Had there been criminality on the part of any members of the team, then the penalty would fit the crime. This is a technical violation that in no way whatsoever gave UMHB any advantage. IMO TOTALLY UNWARRANTED.

Do we have a clue who the player might have been and how important he was to the team's success?

Athletes need to get somewhere sometimes, especially in these small towns where colleges are located, with very little transit services offered. They weren't given cars for extended use, a short loan, twice, and the car broke down. Curse these boosters and giving kids Bentleys to drive. If a kid needs a car to use, wouldn't we want it to be the coach to loan it to him, not a booster?

The NCAA has no cred remaining. The lower level schools are perpetually the whipping boys, paying for the sins of the P5 programs. It is so egregious it is embarrassing.

18 months feels like a pretty extended use to me.

I get why people are upset about the punishment, but this seems like a pretty cut-and-dried case. If the coach "unintentionally" violated the rules then he's too ignorant of the rules to be in his position.

A college coach, at any level should know the rules. That said, the University and coach (could be) penalized in some way, which they were, but the kids should not have their title stripped away by a bunch of suits in a conference room. Sports are won and lost on field & courts.

I interpreted that to mean over the course of 18 months. Not that the kid was in possession of the car for 18 months. If it is that way, it is certainly a different story.

My true sense of this in view of the timing is that CALIFORNIA enacts their law and the NCAA is powerless to do anything, so to show how big they are they lay the smackdown on UMHB. It's like the senior class president who gets knocked around by the jocks and won't let the chess club use the meeting room because they forgot to turn out the lights once.

They estimated the value of the benefit at $5000. That would be a hard number to reach without the student athlete being in possession most or all of those 18 months.

Unless you conclude that having the car on weekends to go home equates to full ownership.

As coach you should know and follow the rules but at the end of the day the kids should never be punished, they are in fact the victims.
