It took 10 months but we have a news release about Paine College.

Paine College Athletics Becomes Member of the NCCAA

Paine has dropped men's and women's cross country and outdoor track & field along with men's golf. Men's and women's golf will return / debut in 2022 while men's volleyball will not be added. How could you not have golf if The Masters and Augusta National is your neighbor. The article does not specifically state they have left the NCAA but at the bottom of the page, the NCAA and SIAC logos have been replaced with the NCCAA logo.

Well, here's an interesting move in the works: USC Beaufort is applying to D2 and has been accepted into the Peach Belt. https://uscbathletics.com/news/2021/...ue-member.aspx

The Sand Sharks have 11 sports total, which do not include basketball.

They also have only 1 men's team sport. Having 2 team sports per gender is a NCAA requirement, not just a D2. There is a little more than 9 months until the application deadline for USC Beaufort to make sure they are eligible to apply. There is a rumor on the FANLAX board that the Sand Sharks are considering adding Lacrosse.

The D2 Membership Committee report on the February meeting.

              https://ncaaorg.s3.amazonaws.com/com...emb_Report.pdf

As expected, Edward Waters College and Emory & Henry College are the applicants.

              Still discussing direct D3-to-D1 reclassification.

Updates were presented on the closing of Concordia College and the potential integration of six PASSHE institutions.

Hartford Hawks are dropping from D1 to D3. Ironically, they made the men's basketball tournament for the first time this year.

Regardless of what level, athletics drives enrollment and also brings traffic to campus. At many universities, the facilities are also needed for physical education, student recreation, university events and public events that can generate income. So, selling off facilities is not really an option for most. The list of four year universities without athletic programs is very short.

D3 can be pretty lucrative in it's own right. There are no athletic scholarships, and no roster limits for football.

Easy to see why it might be an attractive option for some schools, and why membership is growing so rapidly.

Some of that cost can be offloaded through academic scholarships, but the school still gets the money - hence the rush to build indoor practice facilities and modern stadiums. Travel costs tend to be lower as well.

The Dixie State name will be gone. My bet is on Utah Tech in some form. I'll need to get a new cap.

I've been a WAC fan since the early 70's and look forward to their football re-birth. Thanks for the cool post laker. My alma mater San Jose State was once a full time WAC member. They're still an affiliate for Men's soccer. And when I was a kid I used to listen to New Mexico Lobos football and basketball games on the pocket radio that my Dad brought back from Vietnam, he was in the Marine Corps. KKOB AM 770 in Albuquerque comes in pretty well here in southern California at night. Radio signals are tricky, I remember listening to a station out of Palm Springs, CA and then all of a sudden a station from your state Minnesota took over the frequency for a few minutes. It was during one of our summer monsoon storms. We don't get a lot of rain but we do get a lot of lightning and it tweaks radio frequencies. There was another time when a San Antonio station came over on that same station in Palm Springs. As Marv Albert would say, that's Wild and Wacky!
