Converse College becomes Converse University and adds men's teams.
Ashland moves from the GLIAC to the GMAC; Ashland Wrestling had joined the GMAC in 2020.
Augusta D1 Men's and Women's Golf join the Southland Conference, the men's team was a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference affiliate and the women's team was an Independent.
Francis Marion moves from the PBC to the CC and FMU D1 Men's Golf moves from Independent to the Southland Conference.
North Carolina-Pembroke moves from the PBC to the CC and they are bringing Women's Swimming & Diving and Men's Wrestling with them from the MEC; North Carolina-Pembroke Men's and Women's Track & Field Indoor had joined the CC in 2020. UNCP Football remains in the MEC.
D'Youville College fully joins the ECC while their Rowing and Men's Volleyball are Independent. DYC competed in the ECC for some sports during 2020-21. Allen joins the SIAC while their Women's Soccer and Men's Wrestling are Independent.
St. Cloud State Men's Soccer affiliates with the GLIAC. Augustana Men's Tennis affiliates with the GAC/MIAA Partnership. Wisconsin-Parkside Men's Wrestling affiliates with the NSIC. All were previously Independent
The CC and the GMAC add Bowling as a conference sport. The conferences will operate separately during the regular season then combine for a single postseason tournament. The CC will include Belmont Abbey College who was previously Independent, Chowan joins from the CIAA, Emmanuel College elevates their team to varsity status, and affiliate members Lincoln Memorial and Tusculum who are both moving over from the ECC. The GMAC starts with Kentucky Wesleyan College, Ursuline College, and Walsh who were all previously Independent.
The D1 Men's Western Collegiate Hockey Association dissolves with no change to the Women's WCHA. Alaska becomes an Independent. Bemidji State, Ferris State, Lake Superior State, Michigan Tech, Minnesota State-Mankato. and Northern Michigan reform the Men's Central Collegiate Hockey Association with two D1 members.
Ohio Valley leaves D2 and the GMAC to join the NAIA River States Conference. Announced after last year's special post, Paine College left D2 and the SIAC due to accreditation issues.
In Memoriam: Concordia College closes. They were ECC members in 1989-2009 and CACC members in 2009-2021.

The final count of teams added and dropped in Summer 2020 was 30 schools added 43 teams and 19 schools dropped 36 teams. This year the current count is 14 schools adding 34 teams for 2021-22 and 2 schools have dropped 8 teams. Additionally, 14 schools are adding 14 NCAA Emerging Sport teams.
Alaska-Anchorage Skiing (Alpine, Nordic) was originally scheduled to be dropped but only Alpine was cut and it has since been reinstated. Alaska-Anchorage Women's Gymnastics has also been reinstated and to compete beyond this season they need to raise another $444,000 by June 30, 2022. Alaska-Anchorage Men's Ice Hockey has until August 30, 2021 to raise $3M in order to play again starting in the 2022-23 season. If UAA Ice Hockey returns, it will not be in the WCHA.
Alabama-Huntsville Men's Ice Hockey was also left homeless when the WCHA dissolved causing UAH to suspend the team until they can find a new conference. (Will the team ever hit the ice again?)

Moves expected to happen within the next 2-3 years. The SAC will sponsor Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving by essentially absorbing the Bluegrass Mountain Conference; 6 of 7 BMC members are SAC schools and the other is a NAIA school. Emory & Henry College will give the SAC a 7th team. The SIAC will sponsor Men's and Women's Track & Field Indoor. Edward Waters College will be the 6th SIAC team.
