It's interesting that I'm familiar with every team on your list, somehow you've painted a picture of the D2 world as I know it. Of course there are teams in my home region and conference that are not on the list but that's different. You've actually formulated my thoughts, that's spooky.

For the CIAA - WSSU has hit rock bottom with this 2+ year interim coach debacle (thankfully we have a job posting up and are finally actively seeking a new head coach). Bowie and Virginia State are the current two teams who are usually year in and out going to be in the mix for a conference championship and playoff birth.

For the SIAC - I would add Tuskegee. They have hit a speedbump the past few seasons, but they are usually at the top of the SIAC. They actually had some good playoff success when they finally opted into the playoffs (had close first round losses in 2013 and 2014, made SR 2 regional finals in 2015, and made it to the second round in 2016).
      you
For the SAC - I would also add Wingate to the mix. They seem to stay at the top of the SAC and have been a constant presence in the playoffs the past few years.

For the GSC - Heck it seems like at least half of y'alls conference is a true force. On any giving year probably at least the top 3 teams could be conference champ if they were in one of the other SR2 conferences.

I thought they lost twice that year? Because I know they lost to CN week 1 and that game wasn't as close as the score.

Yes they lost twice, and yes C&N completely controlled that game but it got Austin Reed on the field so it was worth every excruciating second of that loss. The other one was to GSC champion VSU at their place.

I've got a sheet somewhere going back to 1973. I'll have to see if I can find it

I'd forgotten about that first loss. CN was a solid team, I hope they're just in a covid malaise and will return to form next year. They are the one SAC team that has had success against the GSC.

Top 15 All Time based on my points system (since 1973). This includes teams no longer in Division II as well, but only their success while a Division II member.

                    1. Northwest Missouri (580)
                    2. North Dakota State (471)
                    3. Grand Valley (398)

                    5. Valdosta State (329)
                    6. Pittsburg State (297)
                    7. Jacksonville State (206)
                    8. IUP (184)

That's useful for someone wanting to know the historical best, but the other list is about current relevance, that's a great place to start with a list of who's who in D2.

By current relevance, you can even do past 5 years. Like 2015-2019 seasons.

I'll whip something up for you ;)

I did come up with a "bottom" of D2 over past 12 years. These are all teams that have not made the postseason and have won less than 20% of their games. I will cut Wheeling and Franklin Pierce some slack due to only having 1 season. This also includes former DII football teams Brevard, Malone, Minnesota Crookston and Cheyney.

Here's another random stat of the day for you.

Since 2007, there have been 189 different schools who have played at least one season as a D2 football member. 99 of them have made at least 1 playoff appearance.

Wow, Crookston was bad - truly one of the worst in DII (if you subtract Franklin Pierce and Wheeling).

They had a rough go of it geographically, and just had zero financial support. Kinda wish it would have worked out for them, but alas...

Before anyone says it yes we all realize that half of the bottom 15 are from SR1. Hopefully the new century will bring new opportunities.
