They could...But I have a sneaking suspicion some group of 10 people would object for some obscure reason!

Next up- Washington Nationals will drop their nickname because it reminds some of nationalism.

Hahahaha!! Yuuuppp!!! And the Washington Commanders will have to change theirs because it's too "militaristic," and the Cleveland Gladiators will have to change theirs because Gladiators glorifies "Gladiatorial Slave Culture."

After that, the Washington Capitals will be forced to change their name because it glorifies "Capitalism." Pro Capitals name folks will "claim" that the name Capitals simply has to due with the fact that they are located in the Nations Capital. But name change agitators, all 20 of them, will not be dissuaded and a name change will be forced.

The committee compiled a report outlining key factors used to inform its recommendation. Selected findings include:https://gwtoday.gwu.edu/gw-discontin...onials-moniker
Citing the need to unify the community, the Board of Trustees decided to change the moniker based on a special committees recommendation.

Without stating my own jumbled political beliefs here:

When Bill Maher is criticizing Democrats people should pay attention.
Just remember that universities are led by people that generally support a different political philosophy than the attendees at football games. I was generally surprised their wasn't more student protests over the Brandon Chants at football games. That being said, it won't be long before state legislatures in red states will either demand an end to this woke culture or pull state funding even further under the auspices of state funding (tax dollars) to the funding of liberal causes. That is the only course of action I can see working to stop this woke culture. In blue states they already restrict travel to those that pass certain laws. Despite the "non-profit" status colleges and universities are in-fact businesses.

See the Univ. of North Dakota precedent.
              Go Bronchos!

Yep...Good example. There is a never ending list of groups that can find "offense" to almost any team name. These groups are generally very small but are very loud. Also seems to be a never ending supply of journalists (or what passes for journalists now day) that are willing to write strongly and repeatedly about the "harm" these names cause on "oppressed groups."

There's nothing jumbled about your politics - it's pretty clear where you stand. Thought this was a football forum?

This is a quasi sports topic in that we are discussing the changing of a school mascot. Bigger "violation" of the unwritten "guidelines" of the D2MessageBoard is that the school being talked about is not a DII program! But as this IS the off season and GWU certainly doesn't often play like a TRUE D1, I think the moderator can allow the discussion just this once.

Of course, you are always permitted to take to Twitter and complain about the unfairness of it all and to organize a small but vocal group to force D2Football.com to delete this thread and in the future better monitor the board to delete this and future blatant assaults on your senses!! Hahahahaha!!!

You sound like someone that has extensive experience being thrown off forums or suspended from social media platforms. You're sad . . really

Sounds like a constitutional republic to me. That's what happened in the 2016 election, after all. Most people who are upset about colleges changing names probably weren't upset by how that played out.

Oh the horror, how will we ever survive a baseball team changing their name? The thought of it keeps me up at night.

The things people choose to complain about are odd - we're being robbed blind by inflation thanks to the mega-rich, but
some college nobody has ever heard of or cared about changing their team name - THAT's the real problem.

Maybe you're right. Caring about stuff really is the problem.

An even more likely possibility - maybe that's not the point I was making.

Any team name really. Names change all the time when teams move. No one really cares and people get upset just because they want to get upset about something.

                                Washington Bullets now the Wizards.

Houston Oilers left and became the Titans, they picked Texans when they re-expanded.

Tampa Bay Devil Rays are just the Rays now (nothing to do with "devil")

Charlotte Bobcats back to the Hornets after the New Orleans Hornets changed to Pelicans.

Ole Miss changed their mascot 20 years ago and few made a peep.

Stanford was the Indians before changing their name 50 years ago to the Cardinal.

                                Like you said, emotional damage!
