  • Interesting football trivia

Are there any interesting/mindboggling/let that sink in D2 related stats/trivia you know about?

Example: Iowa State last won a conference title in 1912. They played UCO in 1922 and lost. That means the Bronchos have beaten the Cyclones more recently than ISU's last conference championshp.
    Go Bronchos!

The ESU/Washburn rivalry is one of the oldest in all of college football.

The 04 Pitt offense was among the highest scoring in cfb history, and it basically consisted of running speed and veer option out of the power I.

I think NW'S regular season win record was one of the longest in history.

Minnesota State has the record for most plays in a single drive in college football history, 27 plays to be exact!

Are we just doing thrill of victory type stuff, or can we include the Agony of Defeat side of trivia too?

From 2002-2019 Minnesota Crookston went a combined 13-165 (.073) in the NSIC.
            • They went 19-177 (.097) overall in that time frame, bolstering their record with non-conference wins over heavyweights Mayville State and Minnesota Morris
              • They never won a non-conference DII game, only NAIA or DIII.
            • The never won more than two NSIC games in a season, and went winless in the league 8 times
              • They had far more seasons with no conference wins (8) than they did with multiple wins (3).
              • They has NSIC Losing streaks of 15, 20, 36 and 39 games
            • In 2009, ’10 & '11 they went 1-10 overall and 0-10 NSIC each season, only beating Mayville State in non-Conference
            • Before closing the doors in 2019, their last five seasons went 1-10, 0-11, 0-11, 1-10, 0-11, with their only wins over Minot State
            • Hypothetically, a senior who played four years and graduated in either 2011, 2017, or 2019 would have left college with only one conference win
            • The best scoring average for the defense in this era was 33.2 in 2004
              • 14 times they allowed over 40 ppg
            • The best scoring output for the offense was 18.1 in 2003
              • 3 times they averaged less than 10 ppg, including just 3.5 ppg in 2006
              • 10 seasons during this era they averaged 14 points or less

Mavericks only benefit of being in the same conference with UMC unfortunately was that we only had to play you every other year. It was almost worse for our SOS to beat you than it was to play you at all. I hope UMC moves to D3 and can bring back football and win a bunch of games.

The Agony of Defeat side of trivia.

In October 1922 the King College TN football team defeated Lenoir College (Lenoir Rhyne) of Hickory, N.C., by 206 to 0, a record score that still stands in the annals of collegiate football as one of the highest ever recorded on the gridiron. The newspaper reporter covering the event wrote that the King team ran the ball with the ferocity of a “tornado” and thus was born the name that has since been applied to all sports teams of the school: the King College Tornado.

North Alabama was the last D2 team to beat an FBS program.

UNA became one of only nine DII schools to beat a Division I-A (FBS) team (since the NCAA's restructuring in 1972) when they beat Southwestern Louisiana (Lafayette) on October 11, 1997. The Lions won 48-42 after going to 4 OT's.

I'm not 100% certain, but I believe WSSU is the only NCAA school thats home stadium is also a race track.

Livingstone and JCSU played the first HBCU football game, which might also be the oldest rivalry in D2 football, on Dec 27, 1892.

Just ran across this on the Aloha Stadium Wikipedia page.

The first sporting event at Aloha Stadium was a college football game between Hawaii and Texas A&I (now Texas A&M-Kingsville) on September 13, 1975. Played on Saturday night, the crowd was 32,247, and the visitors prevailed,43–9.

I guess why not. There is green, gray, red, blue and now black. Natural grass is still the best. rather then oil based turf and shredded rubber.

On October 18, 1997 Shepherd's Bootsie Washington became the only man in NCAA history at any level to return three consecutive kicks for TDs in a game against WV Tech. He returned the opening kickoff and subsequent WV Tech punts to the house before Shepherd's offense saw the field that day.

Missouri State Bears in Springfield used to have maroon turf but it had faded to a shade pink before they got around to replacing it
