I remember there being talk that D2 was the long term plan back when I was there. Always figured that would mean a better basketball gym, but I don't see any indication that is the case. All 5 local public high schools in Merced/Atwater have significantly nicer gyms than UC Merced does. Soccer field is pretty nice.

Academics always seemed to be heading in the right direction. Crazy how much campus has grown since I left in 2020.

I always feel bad when I hear about any college shutting down. I have family members that went to Alderson Broaddus University and when they closed it hit hard. Fortunately the former AB campus was purchased and has reopened as Battlers Knob. It will be used for office space, assisted living facility, wedding chapel, conventions, concerts, youth sports and semi-pro football. That's great news for the Philippi, WV economy.

Just wait until “student-athletes” are deemed employees. Can’t use sports as enrollment/revenue boosters when you have to pay the players.

Yup... it's already begun with small liberal arts colleges closing and clusters of small public schools consolidating. Just another domino falling.

Gonna be curious who stays and who goes in the big shakeout.

The Mountain East Conference is taking a considerable hit (Alderson Broaddus closed, affiliate UNC Pembroke football is moving to another conference in 2025 and now Notre Dame College is closing). They're adding Point Park, but they don't have football.

Back when Alderson Broaddus closed I remember reading rumors on this board that Notre Dame College was in trouble. Turns out they were true.

Mississippi Bill Targets Three Colleges for Closure

Mississippi senator wants to close 3 state universities by 2028.
    https://www.clarionledger.com/story/...s/72763752007/

"The bill would also designate IHL to use factors such as enrollment data, degrees offered, economic impact, services offered, and any research that schools conduct serving the state to determine which schools would close."

"Of them, the least three attended according to IHL data from the fall are Delta State University with 2,716, the Mississippi University for Women, which has 2,227 students and Mississippi Valley State University, which reported 2,196."

"Here is a look of fall 2023 enrollment figures by school, according to the IHL:"
    • Mississippi State University — 22,657
    • University of Mississippi (Oxford) — 21,596
    • University of Southern Mississippi — 13,110
    • Jackson State University — 6,564
    • UMMC (Jackson) — 3,114
    • Alcorn State University — 2,894
    • Delta State University — 2,716
    • Mississippi University for Women — 2,227
    • Mississippi Valley State University — 2,196
Somehow, Alcorn and MVSU might hang on because of their status as HBCUs, but I know MUW has been attempting to change the name of their school, presumably to make it more marketable to prospective students.

According to this article, the Mississippi Valley State men’s basketball team played 13 “buy” games this season alone. They currently have a record of 1-27, having won their first game this past Monday.
