Four schools to become active DII members on Sept. 1

Four schools — Allen University, Edward Waters University, Emory & Henry University and Westmont College —will become NCAA Division II members after successfully completing the provisional membership process.

The Division II Membership Committee approved the division's newest members this week during its meeting in Indianapolis. The Division II membership will total 293 schools in 2024-25.

Additionally, the University of South Carolina Beaufort and Thomas More University, both transitioning from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, advanced to year three of the provisional membership process.

Five schools advanced to year two of the provisional membership process: Jessup University (NAIA), Menlo College (NAIA), Roosevelt University (NAIA), Sul Ross State University (Division III) and Vanguard University (NAIA).

The committee also accepted four schools into the provisional membership process. Three schools — Point Park University, the University of California, Merced and the University of Jamestown — will transition from the NAIA, while the University of Texas at Dallas will transition from Division III. UC Merced, Jamestown and Texas-Dallas were accepted into the two-year expedited provisional membership process. Point Park will enter year one of the three-year provisional membership process.

The Division II Management Council will review all membership decisions during its meeting July 22-23. The changes will take effect Sept. 1.

I imagine the MEC brass isn’t too happy hearing their new addition has to go through the long process. They’ve had two schools close in the last ~18 months and lost an affiliate to Conference Carolinas. What happens if someone else bolts before Point Park becomes full D2?

I mean they are still there to provide competition. They are playing a Mountain East schedule this year.

But when you say what happens when more schools close? Wheeling is already on the death watch since the Catholic Church pulled their funding.

They’ll be playing a conference schedule in a lot of sports but not the biggest one. A non-football member on a long timeframe for full D2 status might not inspire confidence in the conference’s stability from the other members. I’m not saying the MEC is going to fall tomorrow but if I was an AD for one of the more stable schools I’d at least be keeping my institution's “résumé” up to date in case the conference’s membership situation suddenly changed.

Now that UC Merced has announced it's move to D2, I wonder if the Cal State University Maritime Academy Keelhaulers (NAIA) will move up too?

At first, I had my doubts, but when compared to what UC Merced is offering, I think it's possible. A longshot, but possible nonetheless.

These are the offerings at CSU Maritime:

Men's Sports: Basketball, Crew, Cross Country, Golf, Rugby, Soccer, Water Polo
Women's Sports: Basketball, Crew, Cross Country, Golf, Rugby, Soccer, Water Polo

These are the sports offerings at UC Merced:

Men's Sports: Basketball, Cross Country, Soccer, Track, Volleyball, Water Polo
Women's Sports: Basketball, Cross Country, Soccer, Track, Volleyball, Water Polo

The reason I had my doubts was because I didn't see baseball or softball offered at CSUMA, but Merced doesn't sponsor baseball or softball. CSUMA might have to add volleyball or another sport for the CCAA to take a serious look at them, but they do have the requisite number of sponsored sports to be a D2 member in the future (6M/6W; I don't think Rugby is an NCAA sponsored sport).

With UC Merced moving to D2, that leaves CSUMA (NAIA) and UC Santa Cruz (D3) as the only UC or CSU schools which are not part of D1 or D2. And UCSC is in that contrived "Coast-to-Coast Conference" which is basically a glorified way of saying that its members are really independents.

There's talk of CSU Maritime getting merged into Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. I think the CSU board is voting on it sometime in the next few months. Same story you see everywhere else, enrollment on the decline and operating costs on the rise; the problem is that, being a maritime academy, they're a very specialized school, which makes it difficult to attract new students that weren't already looking at a career on the seas. In any case though, there hasn't been word on what would happen to athletics if the merger goes through, so its possible their athletics program might not be around a whole lot longer

Got a link? I live in California and went to a CSU school (San Jose State University), but I haven't heard anything about a possible CSU Maritime/CP SLO merger.

It's interesting to note that there are six state-funded maritime academies in the US:

Great Lakes Maritime Academy at Northwest Michigan College (yes, a community college is host to a four-year academic program)
Maine Maritime Academy
Massachusetts Maritime Academy
State University of New York Maritime Academy (which, incredibly enough, is located in The Bronx; I would've guessed Long Island, to be honest)
Texas A&M Maritime Academy at Texas A&M Galveston (TAMU-Galveston is technically considered a branch campus of TAMU-College Station, so much so that many of the TAMU-CS traditions are in effect at TAMU-G)

There’s also the US Merchant Marine Academy in New York. Not a 1:1 match to the mission of a Maritime Academy but I imagine some portions of their education overlap and graduates probably compete for some of the same jobs.
