What I don't understand is how these schools plan to continue even if they do reach the goal. The plan always seems to be to raise enough money to stay open for another year - which... what is a year gonna do?

These schools basically would have to scale down to almost nothing and rebuild brick-by-brick for long term viability, IMO.
Correct. In the end they fail anyhow as a short term cash infusion does nothing. You have to return a school to break even at least. Can't continue to lose money. You have to cut cost or increase enrollment. And there are too many schools out there and not enough college age students. It actually is going to get even worse in the coming years.

Former D2 member and current NAIA member St. Andrews announced that they will be closing in 10 days, with their final day of operations on May 5.
Yep. Another one bites the dust. They were D2 for 20+ years. Looks like their athletics were pretty bad. Did have football that couldn't win a game.

Sorry for the athletes, but who will miss them?

I saw this. Sacramento State is becoming such a joke, and it appears all they care about is making headlines. Style over substance. Does anybody thing he is really going to put the time and effort into this position that it really deserves? So random.

In fairness, these kinds of splashy GM hires are starting to become more commonplace. Steph Curry was recently named the assistant GM of the Davidson men's basketball team, and Trae Young was named the assistant GM of the Oklahoma men's basketball team. I strongly doubt either of those two will have a lot of time to dedicate to their new roles either.

I don't disagree that Sacramento State is all about grabbing headlines though. Its an interesting strategy, because I think it will either pay off well for them, or they'll have a crash-and-burn of epic proportions. It'll be entertaining to watch either way, at least.

            • Shaquille O'Neal will help generate interest and money. And we all know that Sacramento State is craving publicity. And his son will be playing for the Hornets.

Charles Barkley once said that Shaq would promote anything. Paraphrasing his quote. "He'd even promote feminine hygiene products if they'd let him". LOL

              • Former HS phenom Mikey Williams is moving to Sacramento State. Williams transferred out of Central Florida to play under the tutelage of Bibby and Shaq. The freshman guard averaged 5.1 points in 14 minutes per game over 18 games for the Knights last season.

Oh, I'm sure the kings and queens of Sacramento will welcome Shaq's presence within the Sad Sac State basketball program...

At least Young and Curry have long-term connections to those schools. I can sort of understand that.

Kudos to them for caring and giving back. A lot of alums don't give a rat's patooty once they graduate.

It does make you wonder how institutions that have lasted for decades can no longer survive. I think COVID accelerated a lot of this, but it was probably inevitable given the enrollment cliff that is occurring.

IMO - the way higher education is funded, perceived, and operated over the last 30-40 years is likely the culprit. It also doesn't help that we've long since exceeded the market saturation for number of colleges too. A dozen of these closures might have the same combined enrollment as a mid-size state school.

The United States is (or was, at least) going through secularization which affected the private religiously-affiliated schools heavily too.

It's just a perfect storm of problems. The current folks in-charge have made it clear higher ed is the enemy and have convinced millions of people of the same - so it's only going to get worse.

                              • In case you're wondering like I was, Dr. O'Neal earned his Doctorate degree in Education from Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida. He's been successful in most things that he's tried and I wish him well working with Sac State.
