At some point the NCAA has to step in directly and tell these schools that D1 (either levels) or D2 is just not right for them. Like if you are not consistently solid in the upper 10-20% of your existing division then there should be no opportunity to move up until you can achieve that level of competitiveness for say... 8-10 seasons. Like had Grand Valley or Northwest Missouri wanted to move up after their string of Title game appearances and had conference opportunities then sure. Open the door for it.

Which sport do they need to be consistently in the top 10-20% in this scenario? Football only?

Purdue Fort Wayne remains fully committed to competing at the highest level of NCAA Division I athletics.

I mean that isn't even possible for a lower D1 school, so why even say it. There not even in the same league as the Mid American Conference.

They don't have football to support either. Just another school trying to stay D1 but really shouldn't.

The University of the Pacific announced it will be adding teams and athletes for the 2025-26 athletic year.

"Changes to name, image and likeness rules, roster caps and transfer portal policies are triggering unprecedented changes to collegiate athletics. Dozens of universities nationwide are navigating the changing landscape by cutting programs, many of which have traditionally served as pipelines to the Olympics.

University of the Pacific is doing the opposite—adding two new sports programs and expanding three programs to its Division I athletics department. Starting in the 2025-26 academic year, Pacific will add men’s cross country and men’s track and field, revive the men’s and women’s diving programs and expand women’s field events."

The move will add 82 additional athletes to an athletic department that will now sponsor 19 teams. UOP teams compete in the WCC and MPSF.

But most of the athletes will not receive large athletic scholarships.

Instead the school hopes to increase overall enrollment by attracting new students looking for an opportunity to still compete in their sport even if they attend school by paying their own tuition or non-athletic financial aid.

Interesting concept in this new era of college sports. We will see how it pans out for UOP.

Program cuts are not good because you are disenfranchising athletes, some of who might otherwise not be able to afford college without significant debt. But since greed continues to rule, they want all the money to go to football and basketball (or in Fort Wayne's case basketball). So you eliminate other non-revenue generating sports that fewer people in the end care about. But you really are hurting the athletes

I don't either. And I think that there are a lot of D1 schools who should be D2, D3 or NAIA instead. Big time college programs have basically become professional.

Copper Mountain College (JUCO) who last year announced that they'd be adding Men's & Women's Cross Country for the Fall of 2025 has pulled the plug on the idea due to a lack of coaching applicants. I find it odd, but that's what they AD told me when I asked him.

Quite probably this is an issue with the salary, required experience and location. This is a position at a relatively tiny Community College...It requires either an associate degree and SIX YEARS of coaching experience (or a 4 year degree and TWO YEARS of coaching experience)...and the pay is only a $14,400 annual stipend.

I try to pride myself on knowing a lot of different universities but honestly I've never heard of Purdue- Fort Wayne. I've heard of Indiana U - Purdue I think that's what it was called but I've never heard of this one. Their name sucks so bad they should be lower than D3.

There was Indiana U/Purdue U-Indianapolis (IUPUI) and Indiana U/Purdue U-Fort Wayne (IUPUFW). They split just a few years ago and IU got Indianapolis while PU got Fort Wayne.

Edit: IUPUI split in 2024 and IUPUFW split in 2018. IU and PU got certain parts of each campus. Athletically, IU-Indianapolis inherited the Jaguars while PU-Fort Wayne inherited the Mastadons.

I'm surprised they didn't just rebrand IU-Indianapolis as something along the lines of the University of Central Indiana or something along those lines to avoid confusion with the University of Indianapolis.
